Department Summary

The Division of Academic Innovation leads the HSC efforts in online learning, designing traditional face-to-face courses, educational media creation, faculty and staff development in education and technology, and continuing education credit for clinicians participating in our activities.

Position Overview

The Instructional Designer is responsible for translating needs and performance requirements into behaviorally-based learning products, designing and developing processes, content, and materials for online, face-to-face, and microcredential courses. This part-time position is funded for one year (12 months).

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Create and revise curriculum in accordance with sound instructional design principles.

Manage course revisions in collaboration with development team, including program chairs, subject matter experts, librarians, media designers, etc.

Define behaviorally-based learning outcomes and create course assessments.

Determine appropriate instructional strategies and delivery technologies to meet objectives.

Assess business constraints, audience characteristics, technical environment, budget, and other factors to determine the right media and technologies to deliver the learning.

Act as lead designer and project manager responsible for executing the end-to-end analysis, design, and development process for individual projects.

Design and revise course materials to meet common compliance standards regarding accessibility and copyright.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in instructional design, learning technologies, curriculum & instruction, education, or related field and four (4) years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience with Canvas learning management system as an administrator or faculty.

Experience designing courses to meet quality standards, such as the Quality Matters rubric for higher education or OLC Scorecard.

Teaching experience in higher education preferred.

Public speaking experience preferred.

Health sciences/medical education experience preferred.

Ability to apply principles of accessible design and universal design for learning.
