About OSBA:

The Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA) is dedicated to supporting public school boards and educational systems across Oregon. Our mission is to provide advocacy, leadership, and services to support the educational success of students. OSBA also operates a property and casualty liability insurance pool (PACE) that insures over 200 Oregon public educational entities.

Position Overview:

OSBA is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Government Relations and Communications to lead our advocacy efforts and oversee our communication strategies. This key leadership role will involve building relationships with state and local government officials, monitoring legislative developments, and representing OSBA and PACE in public forums. You will also be responsible for managing all internal and external communications to ensure consistent, clear messaging that supports OSBA’s mission.

Key Responsibilities:

Government Relations:

Develop and execute government relations strategies advocating for public education and school boards in Oregon.

Build and maintain relationships with state/local government officials, the Oregon Legislature, and other key stakeholders.

Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory changes impacting education and advise OSBA leadership.

Represent OSBA at legislative hearings, meetings, and task forces.

Communications:

Lead communication strategies for OSBA and PACE, including media relations, press releases, and crisis communication.

Serve as the primary spokesperson for OSBA and PACE.

Oversee the development of communication materials to increase awareness and member engagement.

Support internal communications in a hybrid work environment.

Stakeholder Engagement:

Develop strategies to engage OSBA members, educational organizations, and community groups.

Organize events, conferences, and meetings to promote OSBA’s mission.

Engage OSBA staff to align internal teams with advocacy and communication goals.

Leadership:

Lead and manage the marketing, communications, and legislative teams.

Serve as a key member of OSBA’s leadership team, fostering a collaborative and transparent work environment.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Communications, Public Relations, Education, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).

7-10 years of experience in government relations, public policy, or communications, preferably in education or nonprofit sectors.

Proven success in developing and managing government relations and communication strategies.

Strong understanding of Oregon’s legislative processes and public education system.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Strong leadership and team management experience.

Willingness to travel within Oregon and be present in Salem, especially during legislative sessions.

Additional Requirements:

Familiarity with Oregon’s education system and school board governance is a significant advantage.

Knowledge of the insurance industry is a plus.
