Job Description:

The Department of Urban Horticulture and Design is seeking to hire a full-time (10-month), tenure track assistant professor of Horticulture. Teaching obligations (12 contact hours per semester with daytime and evening classes that may include online and hybrid formats) may address topics such as ornamental and urban horticulture, landscape plant materials, pest management, plant production, and topics in sustainable horticulture. The selected candidate will pursue appropriate scholarly (peer-reviewed) activities and contribute service at the Department- and College-level to include committee participation, student recruitment/advisement, and curriculum development. They will also work closely with faculty and staff colleagues to help guide the Department's renowned Robert F. Ench Teaching Gardens. Candidates for this position must appreciate and be able to skillfully convey the importance of sustainable best practices and their implementation in residential, commercial, and urban horticulture settings. Those applicants selected for interviews will be invited to submit documentation of their qualifications such as a portfolio of scholarly work and pedagogy, a research plan, and professional references.

All faculty members at Farmingdale State College have three workload components: teaching; scholarly activity (which includes research, creative, and artistic works); and service. The successful candidate(s) will demonstrate a passion and high-level of competence teaching undergraduate students. Candidates will be expected to maintain a research agenda that complements their area of academic specialty and leads to peer-reviewed publications. Service activities include student advisement as well as participation on departmental and college-wide committees. Satisfactory progress in all three areas is required for promotion and tenure at Farmingdale State College.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

* Ph.D. in Horticulture or a closely related field (such as plant science or plant biology) from a regionally accredited institution. Requirements (dissertation defense) for the terminal degree must be completed by 9/1/2025.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Previous college level teaching experience.* Established research program as demonstrated by conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications, or other scholarly activities.* Practical horticulture experience (such as plant selection, maintenance, planting, pruning, etc.).* Ability to instruct students within outdoor laboratory environments (such as gardens and field plots).

Additional Information:

This is a 10-month UUP faculty position.
