ImmediatelyJob Description Job Goal:To ensure that each student in the district receives the richest educational experience the district can provide by exhibiting leadership in the development, implementation and coordination of the subject area curriculum; the improvement in the quality of instruction; and the availability of appropriate resources.Performance Responsibilities:

Provides staff leadership in promoting the understanding of the educational objectives of the district and plans and administers professional development programs and activities for instructional personnel to meet these objectives.Coordinates all formal efforts of the professional staff in projects of curriculum development, curriculum revision, new program development and professional development.Organizes and coordinates grade level and departmental meetings, in order to ensure horizontal and vertical continuity and articulation of the instructional program throughout the district.Interprets the educational program and activities for the School Committee and the community.Informs the School Committee and the community of the department's special programs, activities and accomplishments through meetings and/or local media coverage.Directs creation of and edits for publication, all approved curriculum guides and materials prepared by and to be distributed among the instructional staff.Secures and distributes instructional resources such as multi-media instructional materials/technology, sample textbooks, and curriculum materials from publishers and vendors.Facilitates review of new instructional materials and pedagogy.Coordinates the selection of textbooks for the district through use of faculty committees.Establishes a program for the ongoing evaluation of instruction and curriculum based on federal, state and local assessments.Evaluates and reviews the performance of all professional staff assigned to the subject area in accordance with contractual and administrative procedures. Serves as a secondary evaluator of elementary instructional staff.Works with building principals in the improvement of individual staff competencies.Assumes role of Program Manager who coordinates and defends the development of those sections of the budget that pertain to assigned subject area in concert with the appropriate cost center managers.Recruits, interviews, and recommends applicant hiring. Trains and assigns instructional personnel in concert with appropriate building principals and the Superintendent's office.Supports a program of instructional orientation for new teachers.Initiates and maintains effective liaison with all schools for purposes of promoting integration of instructional programs and articulating subject area curricula among and between the elementary and secondary schools.Stays current with best practices in the content area through participation in professional organizations and shares that knowledge with staff.Performs such other related tasks and assumes such other related responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Deputy Superintendent's Office.The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this classification. A Master's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with particular emphasis in the subject area specialty.A valid Massachusetts license as a classroom teacher.A minimum of three (3) years of successful experience as a secondary classroom teacher.An administrator's and/or supervisor/director's license provided by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.Demonstrated aptitude for innovative development of curriculum; i.e., curriculum documents, projects, curriculum workshops, and/or associated professional development and mentoring.Practical experience in curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation. Other successful supervisory experience is also preferred.Possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.Possess an ability to positively motivate staff, students and parents.Understands principles of adult learning and creates effective and engaging professional development experiences.Maintains a “learners stance.” Is a reflective practitioner who actively seeks and utilizes feedback.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Department may find appropriate and acceptable.Reports to: Principal or DesigneeSupervises: All professional staff in grades 6-8 who are assigned to the subject area of the school district's program.
