Job Description

The Climate Desk at the New York Times is looking for a strong reporter and visual specialist who can develop lines of reporting, gather data and create informative visual stories. This journalist’s work can integrate a range of storytelling forms, including statistical visualizations, diagrams, cartography, video, photography, audio and animation. You will have room to explore a range of emerging technologies. This is a position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week. This position reports to the Climate Editor.

Responsibilities:

Design and build charts, diagrams, maps and other visualizations to help readers to understand climate change science and policy.

Coordinate or lead visual projects, working with designers, reporters and editors to create visual stories for breaking news and enterprise subjects on all platforms.

Pursue original reporting, data collection and analysis.

Exercise journalistic and visual judgment to ensure accuracy and clarity.

Work collaboratively with members of a multidisciplinary team.

Meet tight deadlines and adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news environment.

Basic Qualifications:

At least 5 years of expertise in web development, including Javascript, HTML and CSS.

Strong visual and interactive design skills with expertise in typography, interactivity, color, motion and user behavior. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, especially Illustrator.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to analyze data, documents and evidence to find stories.

Experience with statistical data analysis tools, and a curiosity to learn more.

Problem-solving skills and a track record of using visuals to tell stories in unexpected and original ways.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $111,711.62 and $140,000.00.
