DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

The Office of the City Council President is seeking an established, outgoing Director of Communications to lead a staff of highly motivated team members. The ideal candidate will administer the public information program and perform a variety of media and communication duties. Work in this class involves supervising office support personnel.
SALARY: $99,053.00 - $163,237.00

Work Hours: 8:30am to 4:30pm, occasional evening work
TYPICAL WORK EXAMPLES
- Manage the public information program; meets with the council president, chief of staff and team members to gather information and determine promotional needs of the department.
- Acts as liaison between the City Council and the local news media (radio, television and newspapers, social media), other government agencies and community organizations to promote agency activities and services, and exchange information and counteract unfavorable publicity.
- Plans, organizes and monitors special events and ceremonies such as dedications, awards and groundbreakings, etc.
- Photographs or videotapes events, facilities or operations for use in promotional materials.
- Scripts and compiles slide shows, short films and exhibits.
- Designs, writes and oversees the printing of pamphlets, brochures and flyers publicizing events and activities.
- Supervise office support personnel or assign and review the work of subordinate team members.
- Answers requests for general information; makes public appearances and speaks before community and special interest groups.
- Researches and compiles background material; may compose speeches for the Council President and staff members.
- Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the principles and techniques of public information.
- Knowledge of the preparation of material for release to the media (press, radio and television, social media). Knowledge of graphic arts, materials and applications.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with media, civic, social and community organizations, government agencies and the general public.
- Ability to plan and organize a promotional campaign.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Requirements - A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university and three years in performing public information or public relations work.
Equivalencies - Equivalent combination of education and experience.
