Reports to General Manager - Orange
Job purpose
Reporting to the General Manager, the Designer is responsible for developing functional and production design drawings to meet specifications. The Designer is responsible for creating these deliverables in-house and/or interfacing with other Conrad or external engineering resources to ensure the deliverables adhere to our Conrad standards and are optimized for our production processes and practices.
Duties and responsibilities• Prepare, revise, and/or review engineering deliverables to support production needs for all projects at Conrad Orange Shipyard or our sister facilities as required.• Deliverables assigned may include a mixture of responsibilities such as hull plate and structure, piping, outfitting/joiner, electric one-line, or machinery/equipment.• Work with Engineering Manager, Project Manager or Production Manager on assigned projects to resolve technical issues and integrate systems purchased from multiple vendors.• Support of Production to include answering questions or resolving errors/omissions on drawings and nest tapes which may require time outside in the shipyard production areas taking measurements and developing field sketches.• Nesting of parts for CNC plasma cutting of plates shapes, develop lofting and forming of raw materials.• Maintenance of Project Drawings Logs and Drawing Files.• Weight Estimates and Bill of Material Takeoff and development for Estimating and Purchasing Purposes.• Share and apply lessons learned across all Conrad Operations.
Qualifications• Efficient in utilizing current releases of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Software required.• ShipConstructor, Rhino/Flamingo or other 3D modeling software is a plus.• Understanding of shipbuilding manufacturing processes, materials, and equipment to include specifications and drawings.• Able to use PRONEST nesting software or similar is a plus.• Knowledge of Oracle applications would be beneficial.• Good communication skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work in a team environment.• Knowledge of ABS and USCG rules and regulations pertaining to the design and construction of Marine Vessels is a plus.• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret drawings, contract specifications, and major equipment specifications. Should have the ability to effectively present specification information to Management and/or Field Supervision.• Must be able to give directions and explain technical issues in a clear and professional manner. Must be able to communicate effectively and professionally with management peers.• Must possess the ability to command respect and demonstrate leadership skills. Clearly a person who takes control of the daily issues arising in the manufacturing processes. Decision-making should be driven by qualitative, as well as quantitative, analysis and sound business management practices.• Must be a team player willing to listen and discuss alternatives in support of the principals of Conrad Industries.• Must be capable of working outside as necessary, able to climb stairs and ladders, work in enclosed spaces, on uneven surfaces and in various weather conditions to gather field information, check drawings against actual fabrication and mark drawing changes necessary for revision.
Education and/or Experience• Minimum: Associate of Applied Science degree in Computer Drafting Technology with 5 years' experience in the marine industry, or equivalent combination of education and experience.• Preferred: 5 to 10 years of shipyard related experience designing a variety of marine vessels.
