Key Responsibilities:

Optica’s premier magazine, Optics & Photonics News (OPN), provides in-depth coverage of recent developments in optics and photonics to more than 24,000 members. The Senior Editor and Content Director is wholly responsible for the magazine and oversees its editorial strategy, direction, content, and production, as well as its accompanying web and digital edition. This role is also responsible for OPN contributions to the quarterly Optica European Newsletter and for ensuring that all OPN content, regardless of format, meets high editorial standards and is published according to schedule. To achieve this, the Senior Editor and Content Director writes pieces and works with Optica volunteers and freelancers to acquire content for the various products. Additionally, as a senior member of the Publishing department, this position participates in activities associated with the strategic management of the division. If you are a dynamic individual with exceptional editorial and communication skills, a keen attention to detail, and a desire to run an extraordinary magazine, this is the job for you!

Qualifications:

In order to be successful in this role, you’ll need to, at a minimum, have the following:

  1. Four-year degree required. Masters or PhD preferred. Background in physics, engineering, and/or science journalism strongly preferred.
  2. Five to ten years’ experience managing magazine or newspaper staff, and writing or editing for a magazine or newspaper. Background in journalism, science, and technology strongly desired.
  3. Ability to effectively interact and manage ongoing relationships with multiple stakeholders, including Optica’s officers and volunteer members, C-level staff, senior staff, and freelance and staff contributors.
  4. Excellent oral and professional-level writing, research, editing, proofreading, and project management skills required.
  5. Ability to create and adhere to budgets as well as to effectively manage freelancers and vendors.
