Job Summary

University of Saint Thomas seeks a dynamic, creative and entrepreneurial marketing executive to serve as their next Chief Marketing Officer (CMO). The new CMO, reporting to the President, should have a solid background within all aspects of Marketing including building brands, communicating brand value, creating go-to-market (GTM) strategies, digital marketing, social media, print, video, podcasting, PR, and market research. In addition, the new CMO should be a practicing Catholic and have some understanding of the Catholic university marketplace.

The Opportunity

The CMO position calls for a talented marketing executive who has at least 15+ years within advanced marketing positions and has worked within Catholic Education in their career. In addition, the position should understand college admissions, fundraising, finances, and have a zeal for crafting stories of educational excellence. The CMO will serve as a key member of the President's cabinet and will work collaboratively with senior leaders to elevate knowledge of the University among not only prospective students and their families but also among a larger global Catholic audience including alumni. The CMO should have on their radar areas to create compelling content for print, web, social media, and video in order to improve results in student recruitment, college fundraising, and Catholic media. The CMO also works with the President on strategies to further strengthen the University's reputation in the Catholic education landscape. The CMO should be innovative, well versed in new media technology and strategies and have marketing skills honed outside of the educational world. It is preferred that the individual be a practicing Catholic.

Experience, Qualifications, and Competencies

  • Bachelor's Degree required with an emphasis on communications, marketing, public relations or related field. A Master's level degree is preferred.
  • Minimum 15+ years of progressively responsible positions in marketing, public relations and/or communications with a minimum of five years of experience in planning, writing, editing and production of marketing literature, press releases, newsletters and other print publications.
  • Experience must include managing a marketing and communications department.
  • Experience developing and implementing effective social media strategies.
  • The individual must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the Roman Catholic Church's teachings including but not limited to social, moral, and political issues and the Church's teaching on the value of Catholic education, in particular, Ex Corde Ecclesiae.
  • Proven exercise of good judgment and sound decision-making.
  • Individual must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, effective speaking and presentation skills, and proficient writing skills.
  • Individual must demonstrate a strong personal work ethic and be self-motivated and results-oriented, with strong leadership abilities/management proficiency and collaborate with all University enrollment-related offices to provide the best possible service to prospective students, parents and visitors in order to achieve University enrollment goals.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Advancement to support annual fundraising, Capital Campaign and events that serve to increase enrollment and student retention.

  • Individual must be able to think creatively and strategically to successfully mediate and negotiate with individuals and groups internally and demonstrate the skills necessary to effectively deal with ambiguity and to overcome obstacles to cooperation and foster effective relations.
  • Demonstrated strong team building skills and the ability to work effectively and collegially.
  • Individual must have demonstrated effective organization and planning skills.
