The Building and Construction Division offers comprehensive services across architecture, engineering, and construction disciplines, providing innovative solutions for products and projects. We are the trusted partner for assurance, testing, inspection, and consulting services that help ensure the safety, reliability, and performance of new developments, existing assets, and facilities. Our Building Science Solutions group focuses on acoustical testing, building enclosure consulting and commissioning, field performance testing, forensic investigations, insurance services, property resilience assessments, sustainability consulting, energy services, and air barrier testing.
What We're Looking For:
As the Technical Director, your primary responsibility will be to establish the Building Science Solutions team as a visible leader in the Building Enclosure and Building Science industries. This includes overseeing staff training, developing technical standards, engaging with industry associations, preparing technical publications, and participating in national industry events. You will collaborate with subject matter experts to drive technical development and innovation within the field.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and manage a comprehensive, national training program for staff at all levels, with a focus on Building Enclosure Consulting. This includes technical, managerial, and leadership topics.
- Conduct both virtual and in-person training sessions for regional teams, covering group-wide knowledge sharing as well as specialized seminars.
- Collaborate with technical discipline experts to create training materials, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and standardized work processes.
- Work closely with operational managers to identify and address specific training needs across the organization.
- Participate in senior leadership meetings within the Building Science Solutions team.
- Represent the organization in national-level industry associations and pursue leadership roles within these bodies.
- Present technical content at national symposiums and conferences, and contribute technical articles for publication in industry journals or through digital platforms.
- Oversee the development and annual updates of internal technical resources such as libraries and databases.
- Manage the training and compliance records for the Building Science Solutions division.
- Identify skills gaps and opportunities for innovation in building enclosure and building science practices.
- Collaborate with staff on technical issues related to specific projects.
Required Qualifications:
- 20+ years of experience in building enclosure consulting.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Registered Architect (RA).
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, or a related field.
- In-depth technical knowledge of building enclosures, including waterproofing, air barriers, insulation, cladding, fenestration, and roofing systems, as well as moisture issues like air leakage and vapor migration.
- Extensive experience in building consulting, commissioning, forensic investigations, and existing building assessments.
- Strong understanding of building enclosure testing standards and methods.
- Expertise in thermal modeling and hygrothermal analysis for building enclosure systems.
- Proven experience in managing the financial aspects of operating units, including profit and loss responsibility.
- Skilled in project management for a variety of project types and sizes.
- Experience drafting scope and fee proposals for potential projects.
- Active participation and good standing in industry associations.
- Experience delivering technical presentations to industry groups, trades, and consulting firms.
- Published author of white papers or articles in peer-reviewed journals.
- Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines.
- Experience managing technical and administrative staff.
- Ability to travel 25-50% of the time.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, and AutoCAD.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
