Principal Product Designer - Mobile POS - Restaurants
Responsibilities
As the Principal Product Designer for our best-in-class Mobile POS, your primary focus will be on creating an exceptional experience for restaurant servers and waitstaff. Reporting directly to the VP of Product Design, you will lead the end-to-end design strategy aimed at empowering servers to efficiently manage orders, payments, and customer interactions. From onboarding to daily usage, your design will ensure that our Mobile POS product becomes an indispensable tool in a fast-paced restaurant environment.
This role is ideal for a design leader passionate about shaping user experiences that streamline tasks, improve efficiency, and ultimately enhance the customer dining experience. You will lead the creation of intuitive, server-first solutions that simplify the complexity of restaurant operations, ensuring our Mobile POS is the top choice for restaurant teams. If you’re driven to create cutting-edge mobile experiences, this is your opportunity to design a product that transforms the future of restaurant service.
This role is based onsite/hybrid at any of the following Shift4 locations: Tampa, FL / Center Valley, PA / Morrisville, NC / Las Vegas, NV. Remote work may be available in certain situations. Relocation assistance may be available.
Role
Spearhead the design of an intuitive mobile POS interface tailored specifically to the needs of restaurant servers and waitstaff, focusing on simplifying key tasks such as order management, payment processing, and customer service.
Embed deep empathy for restaurant staff into the design process, using the Jobs-to-Be-Done (JTBD) framework to ensure the product meets their core needs—speed, reliability, ease of use—while reducing errors and boosting efficiency during peak service times.
Work closely with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to translate user insights and business goals into best-in-class design solutions that increase usability, reduce friction, and improve overall restaurant operations.
Oversee the complete user journey for servers, from clock-in to clock-out, ensuring that the design simplifies everything from opening tasks to closing out the day, while enhancing the dining experience for customers.
Identify opportunities to innovate, such as improving workflows, optimizing multi-tasking, and enabling seamless order and payment handling in a high-pressure environment. Push the boundaries of mobile POS systems by incorporating feedback directly from restaurant teams into the product roadmap.
Design an intuitive, low-friction onboarding process that gets servers up and running quickly, helping them learn the system with minimal training so they can focus on delivering excellent service.
Qualifications
10+ years in UI/UX design with a strong focus on mobile applications and the restaurant service industry.
Restaurant industry experience should include designing solutions that streamline server workflows, improve operational efficiency, and support payment processing and customer interactions.
On-site visits required for user research and collaboration: Your contributions will directly shape how restaurant servers and wait staff interact with our Mobile POS system, from onboarding through daily use. You’ll conduct field research to understand the unique challenges of restaurant environments and ensure the product meets real-world needs. This would be once a quarter or so, domestic travel only.
Expertise in Figma and other industry-leading design tools, with a deep understanding of creating user-centric mobile experiences across various touchpoints, optimized for fast-paced, high-pressure environments like restaurants.
Advanced skills in UX methodologies such as innovation, ideation, storytelling, and prototyping, with a specific focus on solving complex user interactions in mobile systems for restaurant staff.
Proven ability to lead complex design projects, balancing multiple priorities, while inspiring and mentoring peers. You will lead efforts that significantly impact the efficiency and satisfaction of restaurant teams using the Mobile POS.
Exceptional organizational, presentation, and communication skills: You’ll need the ability to influence and engage stakeholders across all levels, including executives, while advocating for a best-in-class Mobile POS experience.
Strong business acumen, with the ability to align design solutions to product and business goals, particularly those around enhancing server productivity, increasing table turnover, and improving the overall dining experience.
A knack for simplifying complex systems: You excel at addressing edge cases and delivering practical, elegant solutions that meet the diverse needs of restaurant operations without overwhelming users.
A relentless focus on delivering impactful designs, with a passion for excellence and a drive to push the boundaries of what a Mobile POS system can achieve in the restaurant space.
