As an Apprentice Audio-Visual Installation Technician you will receive in-depth technical and safety training before continuing your experience in the field. Candidates will work directly with a supervisor to install and maintain audio visual systems. 


What is an Audio Visual Installation Technician?

An AV Technician is someone who installs and maintains audio and visual technology. This person troubleshoots equipment problems, installs a system, and links multiple pieces of hardware together in a commercial setting. Projects include components such as:

  • Teleconferencing center build-outs
  • High-end projectors
  • LED walls
  • Audio systems
  • Touch screens
  • Interactive smart boards
  • Flat panel displays
  • Workstation outlets
  • Integrated AV equipment including: Cisco, Zoom, Polycom, Digital signage, IPTV, SMART Board, Crestron, AMX, Extron, Kramer, ClearOne, Biamp


What does an Audio Visual Technician do?

  • Execute a wide variety of cabling terminations for all wire and connector types: Cat3, 5, 5e, 6, and 6a data cabling including the termination of RJ45 and keystone jacks.
  • Read and interpret electronic schematics and architectural blueprints as well as cable riser diagrams and rack elevations.
  • Use hand and power tools to solder and crimp connectors along with various other AV systems related tasks.
  • Assist with basic mechanical fabrication and basic rack wiring.
  • Mounting of base build equipment such as monitor mounts, ceiling speakers, microphones, and projectors, and projector screen support structure installations.
  • Test point to point functionality of systems.
  • Field installation of control programs (AMX/Crestron) – upload and download capability.
  • Install and maintain audio visual equipment including display devices, projectors, televisions, camera systems, video teleconferencing systems (VTC), microphones and speakers.
  • Perform equipment storage and transportation activities in safe and secure manner.
  • Utilize knowledge of basic signal flow for audio, video and control.
  • Maintain a high standard of customer service and interaction with general contractors and clients.
  • Provides daily feedback to senior install technicians, leads, supervisors, site superintendents, and/or management.
  • Able to build and wire custom LED panels from engineering drawings.
  • Assisting in fiber optic cable handling and installation.
  • Maintain an organized work environment specifically orderliness and cleanliness of the shop and jobsites.
  • Adhere to all required project safety requirements as set forth by MCA and OSHA.


What skills do Audio Visual Technicians have?
AV technicians should be knowledgeable about the components of AV systems, as well as their installation and maintenance needs. Technicians must use electrical and internet connectivity knowledge to connect with other equipment. They should also have a good eye for image/sound quality and detect when something is not up to standard or functioning correctly. Another necessary skill set is excellent interpersonal skills. While technicians are responsible for working with the equipment, they also have to work with the clients requesting it. They should be able to interact with employees and describe the problems or solutions that exist. When issues arise, an AV team must find a quick solution and resolve in timely manner. A great technician can calm the situation, explain the problem, and fix it quickly. AV technicians should be able to provide a list of solutions or workarounds to help in the future as well.


Requirements:

  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must pass a criminal background check and pass a drug test
  • Must be willing to work anywhere in Houston and surrounding area
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule when needed


Abilities:

  • Lift up to 75 pounds at one time and at least 50 pounds for an extended period of time.
  • Fully utilize and relocate a 10-12 foot stepladder without assistance.
  • Works at various heights up to 60 feet; can climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, and all types of ladders.
  • Full ability to bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, turn, twist, crawl, squat, walk, climb, push, pull, and reach overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.
  • Possess good vision (may be corrected vision), the ability to see the differences in colors, shades, and brightness
  • Possess the ability to understand and communicate in English at a minimum conversational level.
  • Meet any and all OSHA safety requirements.

Job Type: Full-time / 40 hours a week +

Pay: Based upon combination of experience, certifications, and skillset
