DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the VC-CFO, Information Technology Services (ITS) delivers Enterprise information technology services to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) under the leadership of the campus Chief Information Officer (CIO).Information Technology Services (IT Services) uses world-class services and technologies to empower UC San Diego's mission to transform California and the world as a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university. As a strategic member of the UC San Diego community, IT Services embraces innovation in their delivery of IT services, infrastructure, applications, and support. IT Services is customer-focused and committed to collaboration, continuous improvement, and accountability.The Data Communications team designs, configures, maintains, upgrades and monitors UCSD's campus-wide local, wide area, and wireless networks. It supports the campus's enterprise routers, switches, wireless access points and associated management tools. These devices operate on Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax, and other technologies in a heterogeneous multi-protocol environment.Provide advanced design, engineering, and maintenance assistance on the UCSD campus wireless and wired local area network. Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced communications professional with a full understanding of industry practices and relevant policies and procedures in providing consultation, evaluation, configuration, installation, troubleshooting and testing of network hardware and software to include routers, switches, and other networking equipment. Utilize various software and network management tools such as Cisco ISE, Catalyst Center, NetMRI, Statseeker, TrafficSentinel and Splunk to analyze network traffic and resolve a wide range of complex issues.Responsibilities:* Provides advanced design, engineering and maintenance assistance on the UCSD campus LAN/WAN.* Provides consultation, evaluation, installation and testing of network devices and network management systems to include routers, switches, wireless access points, controllers and other network equipment manufactured by Cisco and other vendors in a heterogeneous multi-protocol environment.* Applies advanced professional communications concepts, industry practices and relevant policies, procedures and objectives to resolve a wide range of highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.* Demonstrates competency in determining methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results.* Installs and troubleshoots devices on campus fiber optic, Ethernet, and wireless networks.* Utilize leadership and mentoring skills to provide guidance and support for mid-level network engineers.QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

In-depth, advanced understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software including understanding of OSI layer 2 and 3 protocols at a complex level and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks. Detailed and advanced knowledge of TCP/IP, SNMP, 802.11, Ethernet and routing protocols such as BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, RIP.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively on large, highly available computer networks supporting critical applications. Advanced knowledge of professional communications and network systems in the completion of diverse assignments.

Has highly developed problem-solving skills to independently resolve issues using defined parameters and technical expertise. Demonstrated skill in analyzing network problems, performance of fault isolation, problem resolution and service restoration.

Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Ability to set priorities to be self-directed, based on relative importance of job responsibilities.

Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

Ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments.

Demonstrated thorough knowledge of professional communications and network concepts necessary to resolve issues using established parameters, creativity and independent judgment, escalating as necessary.

Knowledge of and skilled with data communications switches, routers, access points and similar systems.

Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Excellent interpersonal skills including oral and written communications. Able to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner. Skilled in communicating with campus management, including high-level technical professionals, on matters where University objectives and data communication systems are involved.

Proven skill in analyzing and designing new and upgraded fiber optic, twisted pair and Ethernet networks. Knowledge of principles of fiber optic, and Ethernet media systems including nomenclature, industry standards, methods and sources of information.

Proven skill in interpreting voice, video and data communications protocols and specifications pertaining to fiber optic, and Ethernet, with ability to select proper medium for a given application.

Demonstrated diverse problem-solving skills.

Knowledge of UCSD campus locations, preferred.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Must have access to reliable transportation and/or a valid California Class C Driver License.

Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background check and DMV check results.

Must be willing to work on a rotating on-call basis.

Employee must be available to work evenings and weekends.

Employee must be available to travel as required.

The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
