Job Description
The College of Architecture, Arts, and Design at Virginia Tech seeks a passionate visual storyteller to join our communications team to envision, produce, shoot, and edit video content and still photos on the college's activities for external and internal audiences. The Visual Content Creator is a creative and imaginative storyteller who performs various functions of digital visual content production from concept to completion in an educational environment. This position will fulfill daily video and photo assignments that support and enhance college and university branding, campaigns, and storytelling needs, targeting and engaging a wide spectrum of audiences, from prospective and current students, to alumni and donors, to industry partners and the general public.
The Visual Content Creator will conceptualize and develop storytelling ideas and fulfill assignments in collaboration with the college's communication team. Projects will coincide with written storytelling, website development and enhancement, social media, college and campus events, and other digital platform needs. The Visual Content Creator will work as a production crew of one when appropriate or draw from other in-house production resources as directed, often working with college and school leadership, faculty, advancement professionals, students, and other points of contact. Projects include news-style and recruitment/marketing videos for website and news platforms, shareable reels and videos for social media, photographs for print and digital publications, student recruitment, and event coverage and live-streaming. This position will also edit, organize, and curate college video and photo assets as needed for a number of purposes, and serve as an advisor on best practices for visual content produced across the college. The Visual Content Creator will repurpose content for various platforms in ways that work best for the given audiences (e.g., aspect ratios for social media channels). Assignments may occur concurrently and will often move from idea to completion in the same day.
The ideal candidate will have professional experience as a videographer and photographer, video producer, or a similar role, working in a dynamic, high-energy agency or educational setting. The ideal candidate will also have the ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders, work independently, multitask, and pursue several deadline-driven projects simultaneously.
The Visual Content Creator reports to the Director of Communications. Working within the Advancement model, this individual's efforts must be strategically aligned to support the goals and priorities of the college and university. The Visual Content Creator must follow established brand guidelines, university policies and procedures, and accessibility standards.
