Bachelors degree in geography, social sciences, computer science, engineering, library science, or a related field. Proficiency with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS and QGIS ) and an interest in leveraging software and technologies for spatial problem-solving. Strong data management and analysis skills. Proficiency in data visualization tools and programming languages (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Python, R, SQL , etc.). Preferred Qualifications Masters degree in geography, social sciences, computer science, engineering, library science, or a related field. Experience conducting workshops or training sessions in an academic environment. Experience in providing consultation and guidance in data discovery, analysis, management, and/or visualization. Ability to troubleshoot and provide technical support to researchers on analysis and visualization tools. Familiarity with operating drones. Federal Aviation Administration ( FAA ) Part 107 certification and UAV license, or interest in obtaining. Job Description The Data Visualization and GIS Specialist works collaboratively with the Texas State University Libraries and community to support ongoing development, design, and delivery of data visualization and GIS (geographic information system) services. The Specialist will serve as the lead for the Research Data Services Department in geospatial visualization services in addition to assisting researchers across disciplines in data analysis and visualization tools, methods, and best practices. Through outreach to faculty, students, and interdisciplinary partners, the Specialist promotes and engages the university community with the Libraries data visualization and GIS services. Job Duties Collaborate with University Libraries staff to support ongoing development, design, and delivery of data analysis, visualization, and GIS services to the university community. Identify, investigate, evaluate, and implement emerging hardware, software, and technologies that support GIS and data visualization. Create guides, interfaces, and digital learning objects to enhance and scale Data Visualization and GIS services. Provide research consultations on data discovery, analysis techniques, and appropriate tools for effective data visualization or GIS services. Develop and deliver training to university faculty, staff, and students on data visualization and GIS services across disciplines to connect the Libraries with the emerging needs of researchers. Additional Information to Applicants Position is based in San Marcos and may travel to the Round Rock Campus Library on occasion. University Libraries will not sponsor or transfer visa sponsorship for this position. Limited opportunity for remote work after six-month.
