Purpose:
To research, write, proofread, fact-check and coordinate content for AFS magazines, newsletters, trade journals and other communications channels.
Key Accountabilities:
- Serve as Deputy Editor of Modern Casting and Casting Source. Research, write and edit timely news and interesting feature articles on deadline for AFS’s award-winning magazines and other media channels.
- Serve as Deputy Editor of International Journal of Metalcasting. Lead and manage the process of proofreading International Journal of Metalcasting articles.
- Assist in proofreading. Proofread some articles and assign other articles to other proofreading and fact-checking team members.
- Provides assistance at AFS trade shows and conferences
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Other communications-related duties as assigned.
Skills and Experience:
- A degree in public relations, journalism, English or a related field is required.
- Requires a minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in professional news and feature writing experience.
- Excellent proofreading skills.
- Excellent writing, speaking, listening, and project-organization skills.
- Must be highly organized and able to meet strict deadlines.
- Must be fluent in English, written and spoken.
- Proficiency with MS Office and social media is mandatory.
- Knowledge of Photoshop is required.
- Familiarity with CRM and e-blast tools is preferred but not required.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously in a fast-paced communications environment.
- Ability to learn internal AFS programs required.
Physical Demands:
- Required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, balance, stoop.
- Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
- The work is classified as Light Physical Demand Level (PDL) by the US Dept. of Labor’s Dictionary of Occupational Titles. Frequencies: Occasional (1-33%); Frequent (34—66%); Continuous (67-100%)
LIFTING DEMANDS:
- Lift up to 20 lbs. on an occasional basis floor to waist.
- Carry up to 20 lbs. on an occasional basis up to 25 feet.
POSTURAL DEMANDS:
- Sitting – frequent
- Standing – occasional
- Walking – occasional
- Bending/stooping – occasional

AFS provides members with advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C., technical education through its Institute, as well as the transfer of innovative research and technology to the industry, its suppliers and those who buy castings. Membership is individual or corporate and is made up of three markets, including: metalcasters and producers of metal cast parts; metalcasting suppliers; and casting buyers/original equipment manufacturers. Student membership is also extended to future leaders of the metalcasting industry at a nominal cost.
