Job Description
Through creative and kinesthetic treatment, expressive therapy—which includes art, music, and play helps kids and young adults better understand and express their emotions. During the stressful period of dealing with a chronic condition, life-threatening illness, and the trauma that frequently accompanies its treatment, expressive therapy helps children and youth feel empowered in their own creativity, control, and aid in their communication of their feelings. A child or young person may find a safe outlet for their feelings through play therapy, painting, or music.
Requirements:- Uses music, art, and/or play therapies as a creative process resulting in exploration of patient’s feelings, reconciling emotional conflicts, fostering self-awareness and making memories.
- Educates patients and family members about expressive therapies including the benefits, purpose and ways to incorporate these benefits into daily life.
- Establish therapeutic goals or objectives for creative or expressive art therapy sessions.
- Organizing expressive activities for recreation.
- Providing patient treatment via expressive therapy.
- Incorporating engaging and expressive activities to help members cope with life changes, trauma, and other challenges.
- Helps children better understand and express their reactions through expressive modalities.
- Maintains a caseload and ensures accurate and timely individualized assessment, planning, implementation and documentation.
- Act as the patient’s advocate in relation to Expressive Therapy.
- Regularly update service plans, obtaining medical consenter signatures and ensuring plans reflect members' evolving needs.
- Adhere to all documentation requirements, submitting progress notes, service plans, expense logs, and service provider logs in a timely manner.
- Progress notes are due within 3 days of service provision so that approval from supervisor is completed by the 5th business day following service provision.

Minimum Qualifications
- Certification**
- Child Life Specialist certification through the Child Life Council; OR
- Creative Arts Therapist licensed by the State of New York; OR
- Music Therapist with a bachelor's degree from a program recognized by the NYS Education Department; OR
- Play Therapist with a master's degree from a program recognized by the New York State Education Department; OR
- Current Play Therapist Registration conferred by the Association for Play Therapy (Expressive Therapy (Art, Music, and Play)
- Minimum of one year working with the medically fragile population AND at least one year of clinical experience with pediatric population involving end of life care, preferred.
- Background check required
** Student interns practicing within the scope of the New York State Education law and supervised by a licensed practitioner in that profession can deliver HCBS; student interns and limited permittees can treat Medicaid enrollees under the supervision of a licensed practitioners in that profession who must be enrolled as a Medicaid provider.
