Job Description
Hartmann Studios is seeking a Contract Design Director to support a home improvement industry merchandising event, similar to a tradeshow but fully custom in event aspect. At the event, attendees explore new home products and display sets, experience product demonstrations and interact with a large community of suppliers and company merchandising staff. Attendees will walk away armed with the essential knowledge to help drive sales in key product categories and a better understanding of the business plan and priorities for the remainder of the year.
As bandwidth allows, this role may be assigned to support additional client projects as necessary.
Project Term: 4-6 month Independent Contractor position, starting January 2025. Will involve travel to Las Vegas, NV in March 2025. May be an opportunity to extend beyond initial contract.

Position Summary
The Design Director is a strategic and creative leader responsible for crafting impactful design solutions for immersive event tradeshow and brand environments and experiences. By expanding the possibilities of these environments, the Design Director ensures that designs effectively reflect our client’s brands and enhance attendee engagement.
This role requires a proven track record in utilizing traditional and emerging technologies to create engaging spaces and foster attendee and consumer interaction. The Design Director must navigate various design disciplines, including environmental and graphic design, fixtures, and materials while ideating and illustrating innovative concepts.
A strong background in exhibition design is essential, along with the ability to lead brainstorming sessions, create immersive experiences, and advocate for the team during client presentations. The Design Director oversees the creative production process from concept to completion, ensuring all designs align with client needs and vision.
Ideal Experience and Qualifications
- Education or demonstrable experience in one or more of the following disciplines: architecture, environmental design, retail design, interior design, industrial design, exhibit design, or experiential design.
- 10+ years of experience in environmental design (interior design, event design, industrial design, etc.), communication design, or visual arts experience in event design, environmental or experiential marketing.
- In-depth knowledge of experiential and production inclusive of attendee activations, tradeshows, concerts, and large-scale events
- Cross-functional design and conceptual experience necessary
- Excellent interpersonal communication (written and verbal), creative problem-solving, and presentation skills
- A professional attitude and an openness to receiving and giving feedback that commands the respect of colleagues and clients
- Eagle eye attention to detail and high level of accountability
- The ability to adapt to new ideas, processes, and business problems with ease and enthusiasm.
- Working knowledge in Vectorworks or relevant experience in AutoCAD (a plus).
- Working knowledge in 3D modeling programs such as C4D or TwinMotion.
- Strategic, collaborative, and eager to roll up your sleeves to support projects quickly and proficiently on tight deadlines.
- Proficient in Adobe Cloud Creative Suite (or equivalent).
- Must provide a visual portfolio of experiences.
- An understanding of the importance of active listening in the role.
