ABOUT SONIA SHANKMAN ORTHOGENIC SCHOOL
The Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School (O-School) is a private independent school that provides educational and therapeutic services to youth ages 8-22. For more than a century the O-School has provided a culture of support, a safe haven, and a path to hope for students with mental health challenges, who are on the autism spectrum, or both. We provide a supportive, nurturing environment that provides each child with individualized treatment that allows them to reach their full potential.

A DAY IN THE LIFE AS CONTENT AREA TEACHER
As a Content Area Teacher, you utilize your knowledge, experience, and training to engage your students and spark their passion for learning. Most of your time is spent planning and preparing lesson plans. During your planning, you work with the Special Education teacher to consider the individual education needs of each student and adapt teaching strategies suited to their educational needs. As you effectively manage the classroom, you work to establish a safe and secure learning environment for your students.
Your excellent interpersonal skills assist you as you interact with parents, staff, and other essential partners in the education of your students. With their help, you support the needs outlined on each IEP and maintain a supportive, yet rigorous curriculum. Teaching in a special education classroom can be challenging, but you know that it is also one of the most rewarding jobs you could ever have. You love being a teacher and making a difference in the lives of your students.

POSITION, SALARY & BENEFITS

Education/Experience Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree required
- Illinois Teaching License in Content Area required
- Academic background in elementary education and/or a core content in a secondary education area required
- Master's degree preferred
- Experience with students with Emotional Disabilities and/or Autism preferred
- Two years of experience working with severely emotionally disturbed students as a counselor or within a classroom setting preferred
- Applicants should possess a strong commitment to strength perspective, empowering families and a willingness to work in a high demanding work situation that requires flexibility and innovativeness
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate can demonstrate the ability to read, write, and speak clearly and accurately in the English language at a professional level; has expertise in Content Area (i.e., Physical Education, Fine Arts, Music, Spanish, Science, Mathematics, English, Social Studies, Technology); has computer Proficiency in Microsoft Office; and functions as a professional, reliable, and dependable staff member.
MENTAL DEMANDS
Must be able to plan and implement lesson plans appropriate for students with severe emotional problems and identify and use appropriate instructional methodologies to meet the needs of children with learning disabilities. Must be able to implement appropriate classroom management and control and effectively communicate with the students, parents, and other professionals. Must be able to develop reports and maintain records. Applicants should possess a strong commitment to strength perspective, empowering families and a willingness to work in a high demanding work situation that requires flexibility and innovativeness; applicants must possess cultural competency.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to lift a minimum of twenty pounds. Light moving is required from time to time. Must be able to supervise children, ages six through twenty-one, inside and outside of the School.
