KIRO Newsradio has a rare opening and is looking for a new voice to lead the day on Seattle’s Morning News!
Position Overview
KIRO FM is looking for a Seattle’s Morning News talk show anchor / host. The ideal candidate will prepare and deliver entertaining, informative, compelling news content for fast-paced local Seattle talk shows.
This anchor / host will have the ability to prepare thoughtful, curious topics and present them in a fun, unique manner on a daily talk show that runs M-F 6a-9a. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in digital content (i.e. streaming audio, video, social media etc.) and ability to grow the audience for these broadcasts across all media platforms and promote the show by using excellent writing, social media skills.
Candidates will need to be prepared to submit a full hour of a recent talk show broadcast or relevant demo that demonstrates your abilities.
Note: Work configurations are subject to change based on business needs and at company discretion.
- This position is an on-site role that requires the employee to work at our Seattle site.
What You Will Do:
Primary job duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Content Creation: Plan, prepare, produce and deliver content for a daily news talk show content.
- Audience Engagement: Build and capture audience loyalty with a unique and informed perspective and personal connection.
- Story Development: Recognize, conceptualize, and develop unique angles on trending topics.
- Collaboration: Work with show producer to create performance ideas and audio opportunities
- On-Air Presence: Develop a confident, professional on-air demeanor and discuss current events conversationally.
- Spontaneity and Judgement: Demonstrate spontaneity, flair, depth, good judgment and sensitivity
- Communication Skills: Enunciate clearly, speak confidently, and interpret and read written copy fluently
- Teamwork: Execute format philosophy and collaborate with team to create a distinctive sound
- Technical Skills: Operate studio, recording and editing equipment as needed; maintain technical knowledge, inform management of needed repairs.
- Innovation: Innovate show segments and develop creative new performance ideas
- Feedback: Accept direction and critique and incorporate feedback into future programs
- Pressure Management: Work efficiently and effectively under pressure
- Live Presentation: Present live, unscripted and breaking news with continuity, meaning and clarity
- Company Contribution: Be available for production duties and promotional appearances; maintain strong listenership; contributing to digital initiatives and review performance with management
- Professional Development: Enhance team performance by behaving professionally, seeking improvement methods, attending meetings, and engaging with colleagues.
- Client Relations: Meet clients’ needs, build positive rapport; exhibit a positive attitude; understand and uphold Company values and mission statement.
Skills and Experience We Are Looking For:
- Local News Knowledge: Understand Seattle/Puget Sound area news and general news practices.
- Audience Engagement: Able to build and maintain diverse audience by connecting on a personal level with listeners/users and generating loyalty.
- Able to offer engaging content through a variety of platforms and effectively engage with audience
- Able to work independently at times, but also able to take direction from management/supervisors.
- Possess a basic understanding of operating a remote broadcast (if not in Bonneville Seattle studio).
- Able to distinguish between a news story and compelling and entertaining talk topics.
- Able to identify compelling audio and incorporate into show.
- Able to effectively communicate with a variety of passionate, excitable and driven personalities.
- Self-starter with ability to change gears quickly.
- Creative problem solving skills and ability to think quickly on your feet.
- Regulatory Compliance: Familiar with laws on libel and slander and understand and adhere to policies and FCC Rules and Regulations which pertain to announcers, particularly, but not limited to Sections 315, 317 and 508.
- Technical Skills: Word processing computer skills required and knowledge of social media platforms
- Exhibit assertive attitude / command with a strong desire to advance in broadcasting media.
- Understand station’s brand promise and values and work in compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Ability to work in a fast and concise manner under pressure. Demonstrated ability to present live and ad-lib unscripted content with continuity, meaning and clarity.
- Preferred, Bachelor’s Degree in communication, journalism, related field, or equivalent experience
- Preferred, Medium or large market hosting experience (1-2 years).
- Preferred, on-air experience with proven ratings success
Physical Demands
- Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively.
- Ability to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction with good eye and hand coordination.
- Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to operate computer keys and general office equipment. Ability to work on a computer for prolonged periods of time.
- Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
Compensation Range
$105,000 - $145,000
Salary will be determined by an evaluation of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant along with internal and external benchmarks.
