Program for the Deaf Primary Purpose:
Provide interpreting services for Deaf or hard of hearing students in a variety of educational settings. This position requires the employee to be qualified to use conversational sign language at a high level as well as provide language opportunities. Expectation is employee is working toward obtaining sign language interpreter certification. Employee will be serving as a language model and would have to step out of the role of typical certified sign language interpreter.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High School diploma or GED

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Must be 18 years of age
Ability to communicate effectively
Ability to interpret in an educational setting
Ability to work with Deaf or hard of hearing students
Ability to read and interpret documents
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to speak effectively to groups

Experience:
Prefer a minimum of three years of Sign Language Class or currently working through the Interpreter Training Program. Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Support
  1. Facilitate communication in educational settings including classrooms, co-curricular activities, and school related programs, meetings, staff development, and other situations.
  2. Assist and provide support facilitation for Deaf or hard of hearing students under the direction of classroom teacher.
  1. Help maintain student data, administrative records, and prepare required reports.
Student Management
  1. Help manage student behavior as outlined in student's IED.
  2. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's communication needs.
  3. Keep Coordinator, Diagnostician, and teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned students.
Other
  1. Maintain confidentiality.
  2. Participate in professional development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
  3. Perform other duties as assigned by RDSPD Coordinator and campus administrator.
