POSITION SUMMARY:
The purpose of this position is to design and develop drawings of thermoformed food packaging products and tooling in collaboration with the Marketing & Sales, Engineering, and Manufacturing departments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leads all Phases of Product Design and Development for High-Quality Food Packaging
Leads multiple projects, priorities, and resources simultaneously in a compressed time frame manufacturing environment
Drives all phases of product development as needed to achieve successful timing, quality, and completion
Generates and implements new product and design standards
Drives project time frame and requirements to meet project goals and company standards
Attend customer meetings / ideation sessions to ensure project scope / details are complete
Maintains direct interaction with Marketing & Sales and clients during the development of new products
Engages in in-depth research, project planning & scope of new product benchmarking
Creates designs and drawings for thermoforming, injection molding, and foil products, with a particular emphasis on thermoforming
Generates design concepts and production level CAD drawings to support new products and existing product improvements
Creates product renderings to include with product drawings for presentations of new designs
Interprets customer requirements into functional and manufacturable designs
Interacts with Engineering technical resources, Tooling, Plant Operations, etc. during design process
Engages in detailed product engineering reviews for cost, manufacturability, reliability, improvement, real world application, and recommendations
Develops product specifications for newly developed and existing products
Supports production facilities to drive product improvement, cost reduction, and product specification efforts
Requests quotations for materials, prototype and production tooling, etc. (including specifying tool detail requirements)
With coordination of Tool Design Engineer, leads the transition of product design to production tooling
Mentor and Lead Industrial Design Tech and Industrial Designer I on D&W’s best practices in product and tool designs
Supports Prototype and Plant Trial activities
Designs tooling for prototype sampling of new product designs
Supports and builds prototypes, samples, tests and trials; evaluates samples for proper form-fit-function per customer requirements and provides reporting and analysis of new products
Supports machinists, plant personnel, and other engineers with tooling assembly and testing as needed during prototyping and or new product start-ups
Attends Plant trials at the production location to assist with the start-up and product approval.
Attends customer trials as needed.
General & Administrative
Performs tasks as assigned by Corporate Engineering Managers and other managers
Regular internal reporting as required
Accurately tracks and communicates project details and status; provides regular project tracking reports of product development
Indirect leadership responsibility for assigned projects and initiatives
Performs in a cross functional team environment involving team members from diverse cultural backgrounds
No direct supervision responsibilities, however project direction and lead roles may be required.
High level mentoring of department personnel required
Wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected
Travel as required up to 20%
QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND/OR LICENSING/CERTIFICATION
BS degree in Industrial Design or AS Degree in an Engineering related field; or experience and/or education equivalent with education
6+ years of CAD experience; SolidWorks, Solid Edge, and Pro E highly preferred; MasterCam programming knowledge a plus
4+ years experience in product and/or tooling design preferably in a thermoforming, injection molding, or plastics extrusion application
Prototyping skills (basic machine shop skills) and knowledge of plastic materials processes and materials
Demonstrated creative problem-solving around product design and tooling design/debug
Solid communication skills, both written and verbal
Highly proficient in MS Office Suite
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee’s work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment. Employee is expected to maintain an organized work area and contribute to the overall decorum of a professional setting. A minimal amount of work will require exposure to the manufacturing facility. Employee is expected to be familiar and in compliance with all plant safety and cleanliness (GMP) regulations. Work days are generally Monday through Friday; however, the employee is expected to work additional, including weekend, hours as required to fulfill job duties.
