The Editor at The Steamboat Pilot and Craig Press is detail-oriented, innovative and experienced and will play a key role in managing both the Editorial Department and the reputation of both newspapers.
The Editor oversees the publication of multiple magazines and special section products. The Editor will regularly engage in and with the communities of Steamboat Springs and Craig, Colorado.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Supervise and coordinate the editorial staff, including reporters, editors and freelancers for the daily newspapers, newspaper websites and magazines and special sections. • Write, review and edit articles, ensuring they adhere to the newspaper’s style and standards. • Plan and manage the layout and content for each edition, including news stories, features, and editorials. • Create and maintain respected relationships with community leaders. • Work directly with the publisher and assistant editors to manage day-to-day operations. • Oversee the production schedule, copy editor/page designers and ensure deadlines are met. • Collaborate with writers to develop story ideas and guide their research and writing. • Work with assistant editors and reporters to develop and expand ideas for daily stories, long-term projects and multi-day series for print and digital media channels • Oversee and educate other staff members responsible for written and graphic work products, including reporters, freelance writers, and photographer. • Lead hiring searches for the newsroom. • Recruit, train, and mentor newsroom staff. • Foster a collaborative and productive work environment. • Meet with newsroom staff, including assistant editors, magazine editor, copy desk editor and writers, and other department managers to keep all team members updated on work progress • Develop and execute ideas for written content that will resonate with our audience and elevate the newspaper’s brand reputation • Communicate quickly and efficiently with all newsroom staff as well as our sister newspaper editors and staff • Ensure accuracy, fairness, and objectivity in all published content • Address any issues related to content quality and integrity • Manage fact-checking and verification processes. • Monitor analytics and collaborate with the digital engagement editor to understand audience • Ensure that digital engagement continues to grow by producing timely and relevant content.
Requirements and Qualifications:
• Leadership skills to effectively manage a staff of writers and newsroom staff to produce relevant and engaging content • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, or equivalent experience • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills • Understanding of communication and records law • Time management skills with the capability to effectively prioritize and multitask to meet deadlines • Keen attention to detail • Understanding of laws, local ordinances and legal precedents regarding journalism • The ability to work with the Publisher to operate within a budget • Able to maintain an ethical, honest and objective standard while meeting deadlines • Experience with content management systems • Knowledge of AP style and InDesign • Understanding of digital distribution and analytics
Compensation:
$75,000-$85,000 depending on experience.
