Job Description

Under general supervision, operates all equipment necessary for the broadcast of all programs listed on the daily program log; makes all necessary entries on the operations log; updates station website with program information and audio; and performs related duties as required.

The Radio Announcer-Operator is responsible for broadcasting prescribed non-commercial, educational programs for Radio Station KALW. Positions in this class are not responsible for technical maintenance work.

Job duties:

  • Operates tape decks, turntables, mixers, microphones, control boards and re-mote control equipment.
  • Maintains the program log as to time programs are on and off the air; records meter readings required by FCC.
  • Reads on the air spot announcements and other short readings.
  • Monitors record and playback level of all programs.
  • Sets up equipment necessary for studio or remote broadcasts.
  • Edits program audio and posts to station website.
  • May include additional duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires the completion high school and one year of experience in radio station operations.

Selection Procedures:

After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ): 

Candidates will be required to complete a MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Behavioral Competency Questionnaire: (Weight 100%) 

Candidates deemed eligible and admitted to the examination process will be administered a written exam designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not limited to: 

  • Knowledge of audio technology and computers (including hardware and software).
  • Knowledge of Federal Communications (FCC) rules.
  • Knowledge of emergency broadcasting protocol.
  • Ability and skill to pay attention to detail.
  • Ability and skill to problem solve.
  • Ability and skill to multitask.
  • Ability and skill to read/write/speak English fluently and clearly.
  • Ability and skill to manage time.
  • Ability and skill to write for audio broadcast.
  • Ability and skill to react quickly and maintain composure.
  • Ability and skill to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability and skill to deal tactfully and maintain good relations with a variety of people.

Eligible List/Score Report

A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 12 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
