POSITION: Communication Resource Specialist
DEPARTMENT: Community Developmental Services (CDS)
Program: Communication Training & Resources
SUMMARY OF POSITION: Coordinates and provides communication services/supports to individuals with significant communication needs, meeting the individual’s communication, social, behavioral and employment goals/needs. Specializes in augmentative & alternative communication and supported typing. Provide communication assessment, job development, training, support and continuous follow-up/along. Is responsible for a caseload of individuals with significant communication needs, their support teams and employers for the coordination of communication services, oversight, and implementation of best practice. Provides team leadership in the implementation of the individual’s communication plan. Gathers and records data necessary for the individual’s success and program success.
SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide oversight, consultation, training, and technical assistance to a communication caseload, providing training in developing communication goals.
Liaison to the Speech and Language Pathologist consulting with WCMHS on cases.
Supports individuals with significant communication needs to increase effective communication.
Facilitates small, medium and large group training and/or advocacy activities and provides individual and group instruction around technique and best practices within a variety of settings with the focus on developing effective communication supports. Provides information and resources to the treatment team.
Provides training around communication methods and systems within the individual’s home, work, school or community setting and in conjunction with the individual’s approved level of funding.
Participates in CDS committees as requested.
Supports cross training Communication Training & Resources (CTR) program initiative and organizes schedules.
Oversees CDS sensory room and helps develop & implement policies and procedures around its safe use.
Attend workshops, trainings, and conferences as needed to develop knowledge and skills (competencies) in the areas of AAC, Assistive Technology (AT), FCT, Neurological Music Therapy (NMT), Sensory Integration, Autism, as well as other related areas. Also available to provide training to staff, consumers and families in the above areas.
Complete all agency required paperwork accurately, document required paperwork based on State and Federal requirements and submit notes for filing in a timely manner.
SKILLS:
Must possess excellent teaching, organization and time management skills.
Have the ability to participate effectively as a team member and to be self-directed and work independently.
Supervisory skills are advantageous.
Availability and flexibility to work based on consumer and program needs and schedules. Excellent oral and written communication needed.
Possesses experience, knowledge and/or interest in the areas of communication, literacy, sensory integration, augmentative and alternative communication, supported typing, positive behavioral supports, and assistive technology in order to successfully support individuals and teams.
QUALIFICATIONS:
BA/BS required.
Preferred experience with Augmentative & Alternative Communication methods, supported typing and assistive technology.
Extensive experience working with individuals with significant communication needs.
Have willingness to use own vehicle for transport of clients.
Possesses experience, knowledge and/or interest in the areas of communication, literacy, sensory integration, augmentative and alternative communication, supported typing, positive behavioral supports, and assistive technology in order to successfully support individuals and teams.
Able to walk up to 5 miles in one consistent session.
Able to hike on varying terrain in varying weather conditions.
Able to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
Able to move from sitting to standing position with or without accommodation.
Able to move up and down stairs with or without accommodation.
