The Writing Center of Excellence (WCE) in the Communications and Public Affairs Division at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) seeks a versatile Science Writer/Editor to provide communications support and exceptional service in support of the lab's mission. This position will research, write and edit scientific and research-related communications, publications, press releases, news and feature stories and other materials.
A world-leading science laboratory, Argonne's research portfolio spans the spectrum from fundamental to applied sciences. Laboratory researchers pursue big, ambitious ideas with international impact in areas as diverse as biology, quantum information science, new materials, and artificial intelligence. Argonne operates large research facilities that serve more than 7,000 researchers from around the world each year, and partners with academic, government, industrial, and community organizations to drive pivotal discoveries and foster groundbreaking innovations.
The successful candidate will write and/or edit scientific and research-related communications to ensure clarity, accuracy, and effectiveness. He/she will collaborate closely with scientists, researchers, and creative staff. The Science Writer/Editor will work independently or as a team member in a dynamic, fast-paced work setting.
Position Requirements
Skill in writing, information gathering, interviewing, and communication planning and development. Experience in proofreading and editing complex content. Knowledge of Standard American usage of English. Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style and the Associated Press Stylebook. Successful track record of managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting tight deadlines. Ability to present complex science topics in compelling, easily understandable language. Strong customer service orientation. Passion for the mission of the Lab. Ability to model Argonne's Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork. Bachelor's degree in communications, English, journalism, or a related scientific/technical discipline, and 4+ years of experience, or equivalent.
