Overview:HKS is seeking an Urban Designer to join our team.
Exercises independent judgment in evaluation, selection and use of standard techniques, and solves problems when encountered. Collaborates on exceptional design and delivery for clients to complete assignments with originality and ingenuity. Anticipates job expectations and contributes to project and design solutions.
Responsibilities:Utilizes experience and knowledge of urban design to proactively contribute to the success of projects at a diversity of scales and contexts through analysis and visualization of specific contextsWorks with senior designer(s) and project team(s) on conceptual designs, presentations, design development and production to deliver projects on time and within budgetApplies creative design concepts to projects and expands on concepts of othersMay participate in project proposals to develop design solutionsApplies principles of urban design and planning including building massing, scale, public space design, building typologies and site circulation to projectsUnderstands and values public input processes, community engagement and outreach techniquesSupports design effort and client presentations to develop client relationshipsDevelops, modifies and/or reviews drawings to incorporate the design intentProduces graphic presentations, 3D renderings and implementation documentsCollaborates on the development of design throughout appropriate phases of the projectAssist in the research of code requirements, local ordinances, and emerging best practices in urban design and planningPrepares presentation/design drawings and may build models for client/project team reviewOrganizes and delivers complete project design presentations to client user group or public forumCoordinates with consultants, contractors and regulatory agencies to meet overall project objectivesResolves complex design issues with innovative and practical solutionsWorks with team to manage client expectations, team communication and consultant coordinationQualifications:Accredited professional degree in Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture or related fieldArchitectural registration or associated licensure strongly preferred or within one year of hireTypically 3+ years of experienceUrban design/planning related accreditation preferred such as AICP, LEED ND and/or Ecodistricts AP, or within one year of hireProficiency in RevitProficiency in architectural software such as 3D modeling (including Rhino and Grasshopper, 3D Studio MAX, etc.) and AutoCAD preferredExperience with Photoshop, Illustrator, SketchUp and InDesign graphic software preferredProficiency in MS Office Suite preferredProficiency in geographic information systems (GIS) software such as ArcGIS or QGIS highly preferredKnowledge of sustainability and integrated design guidelinesKnowledge of basic zoning regulations, land use and mobility planning standardsStrong presentation skills and graphic and visualization skills to communicate design ideas at a variety of scalesStrong organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple projects at the same timeAbility to maintain existing client relationships and build new client relationshipsAbility to communicate in a clear, concise and professional manner both verbally and in writingAbility to problem solve and apply innovative solutionsAbility to work and collaborate in a team environmentAbility to effectively meet deadlines at expected qualityTravel may be required.Base Salary Range: $72 - 94k annually - for Los Angeles and New York City only.The estimate displayed represents the general base salary range of candidates hired in Los Angeles and New York City only.
