We have an exciting role for an Associate Director of Software Design Operations who will play a pivotal role in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of software design teams by scaling UI design excellence and improved user experiences across the enterprise.
This leadership position involves designing and implementing processes and tools that create and extend design patterns, optimize resource utilization and foster an environment of intentional software design collaboration across Navistar.
The ideal candidate should possess an expert-level background in User Interface and User Experience (UI/UX) design, deep software development acumen and exemplary leadership skills to guide the design team towards standardized and synchronized design excellence.
This is a hybrid position based three days per week at our headquarters in Lisle, Illinois and reports to the Vice President, Information Technology Operations.
Responsibilities:The following duties are performed with high levels of self-motivation, independence, technical expertise and managerial competence:
- Lead and develop Navistars technology UI/UX team of employees and contracted resources, assuring high technical competence and team orientation.
- Evolve the UI/UX team capabilities to meet enterprise needs as they change over time.
- Assure that Navistars UI/UX design system simplifies user experiences through intuitive and enterprise-consistent components and patterns.
- Work closely with the Design Ops Lead to create and extend Navistars UI/UX design system, its UI components and its reusable UX patterns.
- Assure that Navistars UI/UX design system aligns to the emerging Traton design system wherever possible and practical.
- Throughout the Navistar, foster an experience design culture and enable user-centered design.
- Assure that IT and business colleagues effectively apply Navistars UI/UX standards, methods and practices with efficiency in their creation and improvement of software.
- Administratively manage the UI/UX capability within IT, including budgets, capability roadmap, design tools/software, UI/UX repositories, procedures, work instructions, etc.
- Develop, communicate and implement key Design Ops metrics.
- Prove and show business outcomes against standard Design Ops KPIs and OKRs.
- In collaboration with Technology Team Product Owners, staff highly-skilled and competent UI/UX design resources within software development and support teams.
- Contribute to the company's innovation and growth by driving operational excellence within the design capability.
- Work with TRATON group IT colleagues unify and align experience design across the TRATON brands.
- Bachelors degree

- Qualified candidates, excluding current Navistar employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. - Expert-level understanding of what good looks like for UI/UX design processes, standards and procedures.
- Deep experience in user-centered design practices and methodologies.
- History of success creating and operationalizing design excellence at scale with a hub-and-spoke guidance and execution model.
- Deep technical skills and experience in User Experience and User Interface design, including extensive use of modular UI component libraries and UX/UI pattern libraries.
- Personal experience as a custom and/or mobile software developer that leveraged microservices architectures, CI/CD and other modern software engineering and delivery practices.
- Experience with several development languages, tools, technology stacks and frameworks, such as React, Java, Javascript, HTML, JQuery, Bootstrap, Apache Struts, Hibernate, C#, .NET, Microsoft IIS, IBM WebSphere, etc.
- Experience improving user experience of COTS (commercial off the shelf) products via embedded platform configuration capabilities as well as UI overlays that utilize UI design system components.
- Foundational understanding of public cloud services (i.e., technical capabilities applicable to AWS, Microsoft Azure, GCP) and how UI components and UX/UI patterns are best leveraged in each cloud ecosystem.
- Very high self-motivation and accountability with a strong drive for tangible, value-adding outcomes and deliverables
- Highly skilled team leadership with demonstration of professionalism, diplomacy, authenticity and a drive for results
- Intrinsically motivated to continuously improve team performance and to grow team skills and competencies
- Excellent communication where design and process elements are communicated clearly and concisely

- Excellent persuasion and collaboration skills, partnering with cross-functional teams and stakeholders such that those stakeholders view him/her as a pleasure to work with
- Ability to envision, describe and gain buy-in from others toward enterprise-level solutions
- Excellent technical writing skills, leading to the efficient authorship and maintenance of Navistars UI/UX processes, standards and procedures
- Demonstrated success at balancing ideal versus pragmatic design system features
- Proven ability to balance business needs and objectives against UI/UX design best practices
- Experience working in a matrixed environment, preferably on an international level
