Job Summary:
Our client is seeking a skilled Controls Designer to join their team. The Controls Designer will play a key role in supporting various shops across the facility, focusing on designing and integrating control systems within our client’s state-of-the-art factory. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in coordinating with multiple trades—mechanical, structural, plumbing, and electrical—to ensure seamless control system integration and functionality.
Key Responsibilities:
Instrument and Control Device Selection: Perform application-based sizing and selection of instruments and control devices required to operate and optimize complex mechanical and process systems, including HVAC, chilled water, compressed air, etc.
Engineering Documentation: Create, review, and update controls engineering documentation and drawings using AutoCAD, Eplan, and Revit to maintain accuracy and compliance with project standards.
Design and Layout of Control Systems: Utilize Revit to design and optimize the placement of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Power Supply Panels (PSP) for spatial efficiency, accessibility, and ease of maintenance.
Panel Design: Create PLC, PSP, and Remote Input/Output (RIO) panel designs using AutoCAD and Eplan, ensuring compliance with industry standards and project specifications.
Wiring and Diagram Development: Develop comprehensive wiring and one-line diagrams to illustrate electrical connectivity and functionality, supporting efficient installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of control systems.
Network Topology Design: Design network topologies to establish reliable communication protocols and secure data flow between control devices, ensuring robust and fault-tolerant system operations.
Redundancy and Fault Tolerance: Implement loop and ring designs to enhance redundancy in control system architectures, minimizing downtime and maximizing reliability.
Construction Documentation: Generate detailed construction packages using Revit for instrumentation, including specifications, installation instructions, and quality assurance procedures to guide construction and commissioning activities.
RFI Management: Manage the Request for Information (RFI) process for construction projects, addressing queries, and providing clarification on control system design and implementation to ensure adherence to project objectives.
2D and 3D Instrument Placement: Design and optimize the placement of instruments in 2D and 3D for mechanical and process plumbing scopes, adhering to safety regulations and design standards.
Standard Drawing Packages: Develop standard and typical drawing packages for mechanical equipment, ensuring consistency in design and installation processes while complying with project requirements.
Cable Tray and Conduit Routing Design: Design controls cable tray and conduit routing layouts, optimizing cable management and ensuring efficient distribution of control signals throughout the facility.
Qualifications:
Proven experience as a Controls Designer in an industrial setting, preferably in large-scale facilities or data centers.
Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and Eplan for control system design and layout.
Strong understanding of electrical systems, network topologies, and control system architecture.
Excellent collaboration skills, with experience working with multiple trades (mechanical, structural, plumbing, electrical).
Ability to manage RFIs and provide clear, concise guidance on design and implementation issues.
Familiarity with industry standards and safety regulations for control systems.
