Function - Under the general direction of the Manufacturing Engineering Group Leader or Manufacturing Project Engineer, designs (layout and detailing) tooling, jigs and fixtures, gages, and test equipment for the most economical production and test of the products. Maintains contact with the Tool Room, Method Engineers, outside vendors and operating departments regarding the ability to manufacture and use of items designed.

Essential Job Functions - This position is concerned with the design of tools, jigs, fixtures, and gages which are used to manufacture and test items produced by the client. Most items are requested by Methods Engineers, however, requests also come from other engineering areas when items are needed for prototype, assembly, test, or in development of the products. The incumbent frequently must obtain additional information from all available sources to effectively accomplish the design. On major projects, the requesting party frequently performs design calculations and functionally checks the results. On all designs, the incumbent is expected to check his own work dimensionally. Layouts may be approved by the supervisor as required before detailing.

The incumbent is expected to work closely with the methods engineers, tool room employees and supervisors where the items designed are made and used. The incumbents effectiveness is measured by the amount of changes required and trouble experienced in building the item; the comments of the toolmaker, inspector, and user; and the ability of the item to perform its function.

Accountabilities

Designs, lays out, details and checks (dimensionally) tooling and gauges assigned by the supervisor. Follows up on the manufacture of items designed and their ability to perform as intended. Works with Method Engineers, Supervision, Metrology and users to assure optimum design. Makes recommendations for changes in part drawings to improve manufacturing and/or performance. Assure the acceptance and practice of fundamental safety principles by employees and management. Develops standard tool designs for expediency. Utilizes new graphics systems to streamline tool design tasks.

Required Skills In order to perform this position, the incumbent must have a working knowledge of precision

machine shop practices, cutting tools, jig and fixture construction, gauging practices and assembly and testing

practice. This normally would be a result of two years' technical school training (or equivalent experience), tool and

diemaking or machine shop experience and at least 5 years tool design experience.

A knowledge in gear manufacturing and mechanical actuation is desirable.

As a result of the incumbent's duties and contacts, one should have the ability to get along with many people.

It is also expected that in performing this job, one will make recommendations for improvement on part drawings

and manufacturing techniques. Since much of this work is not directly supervised, the incumbent expected

to keep the supervisor informed of all activities.

Education Associates Degree or 2 Years of Technical School Training.
