Scientific Drilling is looking for a Mechanical Designer to join our Applied Technologies Center in Paso Robles, CA. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of embedded systems hardware and software, as well as experience with a variety of embedded development tools and technologies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Independently applies functional specifications and uses engineering tools to design hardware for product changes and new development.
  • Leads and develops detailed design models, assemblies, drawings and specifications for mechanical equipment, fixtures, and tools using CAD software.
  • Coordinate with engineers to design, lay out, and/or detail components and assemblies and to resolve design or other problems.
  • Coordinate with engineers to discuss and develop design concepts and determine requirements of detailed working drawings.
  • Review and analyze specifications, sketches, drawings, ideas, and related data to assess factors affecting component designs and the procedures and instructions to be followed.
  • Modify and revise designs to correct operating deficiencies or to reduce production problems.
  • Maintain electronic drawing file system and revision history.
  • Perform other relevant drafting and engineering related duties.
  • Responsible for following protocol, archiving design source files and managing projects.
  • Mentor and guides the work of other Designers
  • Independently develops and create PCB designs using PCB design software

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Technology Skills Recommended

  • CAD software - SolidWorks, Inventor, and/or AutoCAD
  • Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Adobe

Technology Skills Desired

  • Product Data Management software- SolidWorks EPDM
  • Enterprise Resource Planning software - SAP
  • PCB design software - Altium

Education, Experience, Certification, and training:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Associate's Degree preferred.
  • 5+ years direct, non-academic experience in Mechanical drafting and/or PCB layout.
  • 5+ years of work experience in computer-assisted drafting (CAD) equipment, preferably AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks.
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry under 45 lbs., perceive depth and operate a motor vehicle.
  • Conditions may include working inside and/or outside. May work around machines with moving parts and moving objects. Working near radiant and electrical energy. Working closely with others or working alone. Working extended or irregular hours and travelling by all possible modes of transportation.

Work Environment, Physical Job requirements and PPE:

Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing the essential job function include but not limited to computers and related equipment, calculators, copiers, fax machines, telephone and vehicles. Ability to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to, safety glasses, hardhat, reinforced toed shoes, FRC coveralls, gloves, and ear plugs or muffs.
