Job Description

Job Overview:

We are seeking a skilled freelance editor with a JD to edit articles as an independent contractor, primarily for publication on our law firm's Web site.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience as a writer and editor of legal content that is aimed at a consumer audience, and will have examples of such work to share. Our firm specializes in employment and whistleblower law; background in those areas is a plus.

Applicants without a JD will be rejected automatically. Qualified applicants who submit a cover letter will be favored.

Key Responsibilities:

  • As needed, collaborate with attorneys to develop and outline article ideas
  • As needed, assess first drafts for structure, completeness, and legal accuracy
  • As needed, confer with attorneys on requirements for extra research, rewriting, etc. — some research by the editor may be needed
  • Review and edit later drafts for structure, completeness, legal accuracy, and voice — articles will be aimed primarily at potential clients
  • Review proposed final drafts with attorneys, make changes as needed
  • Copy edit fastidiously for publication
  • Important: The use of AI tools is forbidden in this role

Requirements:

  • Educational Background: J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school (required)
  • Several years of experience writing or editing legal articles for a general audience
  • Comfort with legal research
  • Comfort conforming to our "house style"
  • Enough interest in this job to bother writing a cover letter
  • Enough interest in this job to critique articles during the interview process
