Position Description

The Examination Editor I is responsible for supporting the ABA’s Standardized Oral Examination (SOE) Committee in new question development, exam assembly, and exam publication using valid test construction methodologies. The Examination Editor I serves as a transcriber for up to 10 item review meetings; provides general copyediting services; and assists with special projects as needed. The Examination Editor I is also responsible for additional activities that support the Assessment Development team.

Education

  • Baccalaureate degree in liberal arts or business-related field.

  • Demonstrates intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office Suite skills including the ability to type 50+ words per minute.

Experience

  • One year or less of test development, editorial work, or related experience, with demonstrated ability to meet stated objectives.
  • Possess intermediate MS Office skills, including such skills as Mail Merge in Word and calculating values, using formulas, and merging data in Excel.
  • Product or program management experience is desirable.
  • Knowledge of basic HTML and experience with SQL or other database management systems highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is highly desirable.

Specific Responsibilities

1. Item Development

  • Guides SOE committee members through annual item writing assignments providing oversight and follow-up to ensure that deadlines are met.
  • Develops and distributes item writing and review assignments, providing oversight and follow-up to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Serves as liaison to physician volunteers, providing editorial expertise, fostering collaborations between committee members, and keeping organized exam bank material.
  • Plans and schedules additional committee review sessions as needed to ensure required annual approval rates.
  • Edits material for grammar, punctuation, consistency, and accuracy in accordance with ABA style. Keeps all information about exam items and related material confidential and secure from unauthorized access.
  • Reviews item development processes, procedures, and products for quality and recommends improvements as needed.
  • Prepares materials for meetings.
  • Provides excellent customer service to all physician volunteers.
  • Advises Senior APPLIED Assessment & Simulation Developer on SME performance for reappointment and promotion decisions.

2. Examination Assembly

  • Develops exam drafts based on blueprints and test development principles.
  • Collaborates with committee chairs on examination review.
  • Copyedits exams for grammar and ABA style.

3. Examination Publishing

  • Adds HTML coding to APPLIED exam material and completes other formatting tasks prior to delivering exam items to IT for publishing.
  • Performs quality analysis checks on published exams prior to delivery.
  • Works with IT team to quickly update published exam forms if errors are detected during exam weeks.

4. Committee Support

  • Works with Senior APPLIED Assessment & Simulation Developer to schedule, attend, and develop agenda materials for SOE committee meetings.
  • Records and incorporates changes to test items during SOE committee review. Conducts quality analysis following meetings to confirm revisions have been successfully recorded.
  • Participates in monthly calls with the chair(s) of the SOE Committee.
  • Generates reports on committee member performance.

5. Other

  • Provides transcription services for SOE Committee meetings.
  • Provides occasional copyediting for other assessments.
  • Provides transcription services for selected exam review and item writing workshops each year.
  • Assists the Senior APPLIED Assessment & Simulation Developer with other APPLIED Exam development projects.

Special Requirements

  • Must be able to participate in committee meetings that occur on weekends or extend outside of normal business hours, including early morning and evening.
  • Must be available to provide occasional email coverage after office hours to respond to question authors, editors, and committee chairs regarding item development.
  • Must be able to work onsite in Raleigh, NC, at least two days/week.
