Description
Science has an exciting opportunity for an Associate News Editor to join our news department. The news team covers research, policy, and science-in-society for a readership of scientists and interested non-specialists.
Working in a fast-paced but collegial environment, the Associate News Editor will edit stories for the daily news site as well as report and write stories for online and the weekly magazine.
What You'll Do
- Work with the Online News Editor to assign and edit news stories for Science's news site
- When the Online News Editor is on vacation or reporting and writing stories, oversee online site, plan coverage, and enlist editing help from other editors
- Write research and policy stories for print and online
- Help select and manage interns and recruit new freelance writers
What We're Looking For
- 3 years experience in science journalism
- 2 years experience as an editor
- Familiarity with science and science policy
- Ability to edit fast, well, and accurately
- Ability to write clearly, conversationally, and compellingly
- A keen sense of news
- People skills; editing at Science involves extensive collaboration with reporters, art staff, and copyeditors

The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is $80,000 - $90,000 per year (for candidates hired in the US). AAAS currently provides the following benefits for this position: paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, flexible spending account, dental insurance, life insurance, vision insurance, retirement benefits, short- and long-term disability, each subject to the terms of the applicable program. Additional benefits may apply.
Any actual offer of employment, reflecting the total compensation package and benefits, will be made in the sole discretion of AAAS and will be based on a variety of factors, including years of experience, depth of experience, and other relevant factors. AAAS reserves the right to amend or modify its employment benefits and compensation structure at any time.
