Pay Range: $57,000 – 65,000 annually

Summary:
The Capitol Editor / Producer will work with the Capitol Reporter and collaborate with editorial partners’ news teams to produce coverage of the Capitol and Colorado politics for radio broadcast and digital news platforms. The Editor / Producer also will implement the KUNC newsroom’s digital news strategy to edit and produce content to make it “shine” for our website and social media. This position is part of the Colorado Capitol News Alliance, a CPB-funded state-wide collaboration to expand the coverage of Colorado state government. The ideal candidate will be a strong collaborator with a background in political reporting, preferably in Colorado. Experience with both broadcast and print/digital writing and producing is required. This position is based in Denver.
Essential Functions:
- Works with the Capitol reporter to cover state politics for radio news and digital channels. The Editor / Producer must both report and edit to ensure that issues important to Colorado audiences are being covered, including daily radio and digital stories, as well as long-term news-features that dig deeper into political issues.
- Creates, writes, edits and produces original digital and radio news content, as assigned.
- Plans and communicates daily and longer-term coverage, while soliciting suggestions and requests from the KUNC newsroom and members of the collaboration.
- Works with the KUNC newsroom and partner stations to develop a communication and filing system that keeps the collaboration informed and engaged about editorial initiatives.
- Collaborates with partner colleagues to produce a weekly political podcast.
- Collaborates with partner Rocky Mountain PBS around social and digital videos related to the Capitol coverage.
- Tracks and reports story metrics and carriage as required by the CPB grant.
- Creates digital content that includes explainers, standups and news updates.
- Utilizes the KUNC newsroom and social media calendars to create campaigns for editorial initiatives and social media promotions.
- Monitors for and may be responsible for aiding in the on-line and broadcast reporting of breaking news related to Colorado politics and the Capitol.
- Edits stories in general breaking news situations and works with reporters to acquire and distribute timely and accurate information.
- Works with news staff and editorial partners to adapt and create original content for digital platforms.
- Participates in morning and monthly newsroom meetings with KUNC News staff and editors to pitch story ideas to the newsroom team.
- Works with the Digital Managing Editor to plan for digital special events such as press conferences, legislative hearings, and live interviews.
- Posts content from KUNC collaborators and partners and makes KUNC content available to collaborators.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Participates in on-air fundraising as well as station development and promotional functions, as needed.
- Appears on air to talk about reporting and projects as needed.
- Acts as a member of the team who may have a variety of duties during major events such as Election Nights or breaking news situations.
- Familiarizes and follows NPR ethics and style guidelines for all edited and published work appearing on the KUNC website. Shares this knowledge and best practices with newsroom staff throughout the editing process.
- Provides a watchful eye on all KUNC content through a diversity, equity and inclusion lens.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge
- Experience writing and editing for broadcast and digital or print news publication.
- Experience using Photoshop, video editing tools, & audio editing tools (Adobe Audition).
- Understands and can apply ethical practices when selecting, editing and using photographs for digital stories and social media.
- Excellent understanding of digital and social media concepts and tools.
- Strong knowledge of AP Style and ethics for reporting, headlines and social media.
- Basic knowledge of web design and CMS preferred.
- Basic experience working with data and data visualization preferred.

Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in media, communications, web design, or related field.
- At least three years’ experience in the field reporting or editing. Experience in public media preferred.
- Valid Colorado driver’s license.
- Must reside in Colorado.
- Bilingual in Spanish is helpful.
Physical Demands:
The employee frequently stands, walks, sits, uses hands and fingers, reaches and lifts with arms, climbs, stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls. The employee is required to frequently lift up to 30 pounds without assistance. Work Environment:
The employee typically works indoors in a standard office environment but is required to travel to other locations for station events and donor meetings.
