About the Role
*** This is an onsite position with five days per week (M-F) in office required at our San Francisco, CA newsroom. ***
MLex is seeking a reporter in San Francisco, CA to cover the intersection of technology and the law, particularly as regards emerging transportation technologies, including issues raised by the Department of Transportation, the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission.
The ideal candidate will have some experience covering Congress, the federal court system and state or federal agencies; and will have enthusiasm for partnering with other reporters. MLex is a highly collaborative environment, and the reporter will frequently work with reporters focused on similar topics in Brussels, Silicon Valley, Hong Kong and elsewhere.
The job offers opportunities to break news on topics such as energy, encryption, privacy, data security, and facial recognition, and to write in-depth stories about the implications of emerging technologies.
ResponsibilitiesWriting clear, well-organized news stories and analysisLocating and organizing relevant information from public documents and other sourcesWriting one-paragraph summaries identifying key information in those documentsCreating and modifying portfolios with relevant informationCoordinating with reporters and editors to ensure that portfolios are complete
RequirementsPossess a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or legal backgroundExperience reporting and writing newsHave solid writing skills and a demonstrated ability to be proactive in shaping MLex’s coverageHave the ability to provide analysis of events and documents, illuminating context and big-picture trendsPossess a background in law, and/or experience in news or legal organizations is preferred
