The Utility Designer 3 is responsible for planning, designing, verifying locations, inspecting, or otherwise capturing information related to utility and telecommunication assets. This is an intermediate level position and individuals are expected to understand and apply technical information and skills with minimal support.

Compensation is determined after the interview process based on education and direct industry experience in Make Ready Engineering. This is a full-time, non-exempt position, pay range is $28-32/hr for qualified candidates.
Responsibilities:
• Analyze field data using software platforms.
• Record and maintain telecommunication and electric utility infrastructure information.
• Identify and address safety risks and ensure compliance with standards.
• Design aerial and underground utilities, ensuring compliance with standards including: remedy any National Electric Safety Code violations, perform pole loading analysis, incorporate utility specific standards and specifications.
• Optimize designs for cost-effectiveness and safety.
• Transpose the design solution to other software platforms specifically: utilize various CAD programs to complete a 2-D design print, utilize various CU/MU (Compatible/Macro Unit) programs to complete a design estimate, complete cost causation analysis and assign a percentage of incurred construction cost to any involved parties, as outlined by the utility specific specifications, utilize various notification programs to communicate the design work being completed to other involved parties.
• Obtain necessary permits for designs.
• Review and correct data errors in utility databases.
• Develop solutions based on client specifications.
• Communicate effectively with clients to clarify design requirements.
• Resolve design challenges promptly and efficiently.
• Collaborate with others (project managers, supervisors, engineers, other designers, technicians, and administrators) to propose the best infrastructure design solutions.
• Ensure the proper care and maintenance of any vehicle and equipment assigned including regular inspections, maintenance checks, and prompt reporting of any issues to the appropriate supervisor or maintenance personnel.
• Manage document systems and ensure proper filing.
• Respond appropriately to emergencies and report incidents promptly.
• Participate in employee and training events as assigned.
• Travel (10-20%) for on-site job duty training, projects, or meetings.
• Perform additional duties as assigned, adhering to company policies and procedures.
Required:
• High school diploma with 3+ years in electric utility or telecommunications, or Bachelor's degree in engineering (or related field) with 1+ year industry experience.
• Obtain and maintain relevant professional certificates and licenses as per project requirements.
• Proficiency in CAD/Outside Plant Engineering design software, Katapult & SpidaCalc, PLA software, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and data entry. Ability to adapt to new client-required system software.
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to draft clear, professional correspondence and effectively present information in various settings.
• Ability to perform moderately complex arithmetic computations, apply understanding to carry out detailed instructions, apply technical knowledge to tackle advanced design challenges, and meet client needs. Proven skill in resolving complex problems involving multiple variables and diverse situations.
• Skilled in identifying and resolving problems involving multiple variables and varied situations.
Preferred:
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field preferred.
• 5 years of prior experience in electric utility or telecommunications industry preferred.
• Capability in electric hazard identification, electric equipment identification, or communication equipment identification preferred.
• OSHA 1910.269 qualified training preferred, including skills in rubber insulating gloves, electric meter change out, insulated measuring sticks, open enclosure methodology, and phasing tools; training provided as required by projects.
