TITLE: Graphic DesignerDEPARTMENT: Marketing DepartmentREPORTS TO: Director of MarketingCLASSIFICATION: Staff-12 monthsEFFECTIVE DATE: TBDSTANDARD WORK HOURS: 37.5 hours per weekEMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-TimeEMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: ExemptJOB SUMMARY:The Graphic Designer in the Office of Marketing at Kentucky State University is responsible for visualizing and creating graphics, including illustrations, logos, layouts, and photos. Under general supervision, this position will design electronic and printed materials, exhibit elements, and/or illustrations for a variety of university publications, displays, and other media, as appropriate.The Graphic Designer will provide a range of support for Kentucky State University faculty and staff as well as marketing and promotional materials, including design work for paid and earned media campaigns. Additionally, the designer will be adept in conceptual development, including the innovation process of projects in many different mediums. The designer will communicate ideas in the form of presentations, web media, print media, and prototypes. Ideas will be communicated clearly and effectively, verbally and visually, internally and externally with attention to detail. Must be able to work well under pressure and tight deadlines, with the possibility of working after hours.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Conceptualizes, designs, and produces curriculum, training, and/or promotional materials such as flyers, ads, brochures, logos, office signage, exhibits, and/or displays.Designs and produces print-ready art including graphs, charts, clip art, posters, digitization of graphics, line art, and/or photos.Creates electronically designed page layouts and imports word processing files into page layouts, as appropriate to the position; develops and produces web-based graphics, as requested.Produces technical and scientific illustrations for presentations and/or publication, as appropriate to the position's requirements.Consults with faculty and staff to identify their graphics needs, budget constraints, and reasonable deadlines for the project; serves as a liaison between the client and printers/publishers.Coordinates the printing production process to ensure quality: writes printing and other reproduction specifications (selects ink, paper, and print quality); inspects proofs for accuracy; recommends contractors (typesetters, printers, illustrators, photographers, cartographers).Writes and edits basic copy, as appropriate, which may include press releases in some instances.May coordinate a graphics or photographic library and/or maintain digital records.May provide technical computer support and install software programs.May coordinate and lead the work of others.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Knowledge of principles and practices of graphic design.Proficiency in design software including Adobe Creative Cloud and others.Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.Ability to create and produce graphic materials using a range of media, methods, techniques, and equipment.Knowledge of graphic layout and photographic requirements and procedures.Skills in the utilization of specified computerized graphic design programs.Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Ability to analyze graphic and technical information and create interpretive illustrations.Budget development and management skills related to the production of new digital or traditional media communications.Ability to analyze and interpret user graphic requirements.Knowledge of printing and/or reproduction processes and techniques.Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements.Ability to develop print and/or reproduction specifications.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This position does not have supervisory responsibility.OTHER DUTIES: Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Marketing, or related field.Three years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.Licensing and Certifications: NAWORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.Limited physical effort is required.Limited exposure to physical risk.KENTUCKY STATE UNIVERSITY is an Equal Opportunity EmployerThe functions, qualifications, knowledge/skills, and physical requirements listed in this job description represent the essential duties of the job, which the incumbent must be able to perform either with or without reasonable accommodation.
