Job Description:We are seeking an
IT Technical Writer
to join our team and play a key role in creating, updating, and maintaining high-quality technical documentation for our applications, websites, and IT programs. The ideal candidate will have experience writing clear, concise, and accurate documentation tailored to a range of technical and non-technical audiences. You will work closely with business and technical stakeholders, including analysts, developers, engineers, and IT security professionals, to ensure documentation aligns with current systems, processes, and best practices.
Key Responsibilities:Communication and Document Development:Create, update, and maintain documentation
for applications, websites, systems, and programs, including user manuals, technical procedures, work instructions, and process flows.Collaborate with relevant stakeholders and technical owners
to generate and revise documents based on their input or as processes change.Review and format technical documentation
, ensuring clarity, conciseness, and proper style. Provide completed documents to OIT or agency customers for final review and approval.Create process flows, diagrams, and visuals
(such as networks and infrastructure diagrams) using Microsoft Office or Google applications (Word, Visio, PowerPoint, Google Docs, etc.).Ensure the accuracy and usability
of documents by working with contributors to resolve any content gaps or issues.Maintain and update
document repositories , applying consistent naming conventions and document versioning for standardization.Translate complex technical materials
into user-friendly language without compromising the technical accuracy of the content.Work with
subject matter experts (SMEs)
to gather information and ensure the documentation accurately reflects business and system processes.Knowledge Building:
Stay up-to-date with the latest
technical writing trends and best practices
for IT-related systems, applications, websites, and programs.Maintain
expert knowledge
of commonly used business applications such as Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.Demonstrate expertise in applying
style guidelines
(e.g., The Associated Press Stylebook) to ensure consistency across all documents.Develop and maintain a
deep understanding
of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and how it impacts technical documentation.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree
in English, Journalism, Communications, Technical Writing, Computer Science, or a related field. Equivalent experience in technical writing may be considered.A minimum of
three years of demonstrable experience
in technical writing, ideally in an IT environment (e.g., creating user manuals, online help guides, training materials, system administration guides, API documentation, release notes, or network/security/database documentation).Skills and Knowledge:
Excellent writing and editing skills
: Proven ability to produce clear, concise, and accurate documentation that is easy for the target audience to understand.Strong technical aptitude
: Ability to quickly learn complex technical concepts and explain them in an accessible manner. Familiarity with IT systems, software development, networking, and security is preferred.Understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC)
: Familiarity with how software is designed, developed, and tested, and how this impacts technical documentation.Experience with documentation tools
: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Visio, PowerPoint) and Google Suite (Docs, Slides, Sheets). Familiarity with other diagramming tools and content management systems is a plus.Attention to detail
: Ability to maintain high standards of quality and accuracy while working with multiple stakeholders.Team collaboration and independence
: Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Experience working in collaborative settings with developers, engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders.Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with
API documentation
or
technical content for web applications .Familiarity with
Agile methodologies
or other development methodologies.Prior experience with
technical writing in the IT security space
