Job Description The Drug Product Design and Development (DPDD) group within the Small Molecule CMC organization is responsible for designing and developing formulations that enable delivery of AbbVies candidate molecules in a dosage form for clinical evaluation during early development. DPDD is also accountable for developing drug products for Phase 3 clinical study and advancing for product commercialization. We have an exciting opportunity for a Scientist I/Scientist II position in North Chicago, IL. We are seeking a highly motivated and collaborative scientist with strong background and hands-on experiences in parenteral and/or oral formulations. The primary role for this position is to support lab-based development activities related to parenteral and oral formulations including nano and microparticle-based drug products such as lipid nanoparticles or long acting injectables. Key responsibilities include: Independently design and conduct critical experiments that further project goals. Interpret results and draw conclusions from own multistage experiments, note significant deviations, then suggest, design, and pursue relevant experiments. Implement and may innovate new experimental protocols. Understand relevant scientific literature and apply theoretical framework to solving problems within scientific discipline in a timely manner. Demonstrate a high level of proficiency in his/her field. Understand the goal and maintain a high proficiency in his/her projects as well as the overall program Perform routine and complex tasks competently and independently and generate reliable and consistent results. Impact projects mostly through lab and/or pilot plant-based activities where applicable. Qualifications Basic: Scientist I: MS (typically 2 years of experience) or BS (typically 5 years of experience), Scientist II: MS (typically 5 years of experience) or BS (typically 7 years of experience), in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering or equivalent disciplines. Ability to independently design, execute and interpret experiments to answer scientific questions. Ability to learn, understand and master new experimental techniques. Ability to multitask and work within timelines. Scientific writing skills and strong verbal communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team setting. Preferred: Experience in utilizing preparation methods for parenteral formulations (microfluidic technology, thin-film-hydration, single/double emulsions using probe sonication and homogenization, nanoprecipitation, wet milling, etc.) and analytical techniques and instruments (i.e., DLS, laser diffraction, HPLC, DSC, TGA, etc.) for characterization of pharmaceutical dosage forms. Experience in the characterization of particulate based formulations. Familiarity with GSP, GLP, GMP.
