Responsibilities
We are looking for talented and motivated individuals who enjoy working in a collaborative environment. The Senior Lighting Designer or Associate Lighting Designer will work collaboratively with the ALULA lighting team and oversees all management and production within their designated lighting team, including design, technical guidance, scheduling, and utilization. This applies to ALULA direct projects as well as internal lighting support for HIDI’s electrical base building / tenancy department’s projects.
The Senior Lighting Designer or Associate Lighting Designer must have a solid design and technical training in all aspects of Lighting Design in order to lead and serve as role model for their team. When faced with a tight project deadline where additional resources are needed, the Senior Lighting Designer or Associate should have the required skills to jump in with their team to help with production work, such as concept presentations, lighting layouts, lighting calculations, fixture specifications, mock-ups, and contract administration work (i.e. shop drawings reviews, site visits and fixture aiming).
Business Development
- Develop relationships with clients and consultants of the parallel level that foster ongoing goodwill and business.
- Create proposals and fee Letters as assigned with Lighting Design Principal guidance.
- Explore opportunities for value added services and new markets.
- Carry out client centric Lunch and Learns with Architects, Interior designers and other design based disciplines.
- Attend professional seminars on behalf of the company.
- Senior or Associate Lighting Designer should represent the firm in a professional and positive manner.
General Management
- Responsible for full delivery of a project from start to finish with their team.
- Delegate work effectively and ensure that all direct reports are scheduling their workload appropriately, maximizing productive time and allowing all employees to meet management's expectations.
- Provide insightful and enthusiastic leadership, paying attention to employee morale.
- Complete performance reviews of all direct reports and sit in on all performance reviews.
- Assist with interviewing new employees for future recruitments as requested.
- Work with the heads of all functional areas to solve inter-departmental problems. Interview, train, motivate, supervise, and discipline all direct reports.
- Ensure department procedures and standards are being followed by all their team members and to ensure quality of work and deliverable meets ALULA standards.
Production
- Attend and participate in weekly Lighting team meetings, or run the meeting if Lighting Principal is unavailable.
- Perform quality control to ensure team is in compliance with ALULA procedures and design standards, that all projects are staying on track and on schedule.
- Facilitate coordination and communication within team to support smooth day-to-day operations and improvement activities, including sharing resources between ALULA teams.
- Monitor project performance and production utilization and report/communicate with Lighting Principal when necessary.
- Thorough knowledge of the lighting industry, including luminaire trends and research, mock-up and assessments.
- Familiarity with legacy light sources (fluorescent, compact fluorescent, H.I.D., and incandescent/halogen) and lamp shapes is required for potential lighting retrofit style projects or existing facility renovation projects.
- Senior Lighting Designer or Associate should already have strong relationships with lighting manufacturer, reps, and clients.
- Responsible to attend on-site (in town or out of town) lighting surveys, meetings, presentations, mock-up sessions, or final fixture aiming/focusing.
Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum 7 years of experience in the Architectural Lighting Design industry. Please only apply for this position if this requirement is met.
- Fluent in spoken and written English and have strong interpersonal communication skills
- Strong people management skills

- Ability to coach and mentor direct reports
- AutoCAD, Revit, AGI32 or Dialux, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite
- 3D modeling software such as Sketchup, Rhino (great to have, not a must)
- Participate in industry related professional organizations (IALD, IES, etc.)
- Certified Lighting Designer (CLD) (great to have, not a must)
