Position Summary:

The Civil Designer's primary function is to draft and design (with guidance from engineer) site developments. Typical elements will include roads, layout, water and sewer, drainage, grading, storm water management, and erosion control. The Designer will be responsible for meeting project schedules as assigned by their supervisor.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare conceptual and preliminary site masterplans, meeting the various zoning constraints for the given jurisdiction (setbacks, buffers, parking requirements, etc.).
  • Work with GIS Shapefiles obtained from localities as well as DEM and/or LAS files to develop preliminary topographical maps for preliminary engineering and due diligence. This includes experience working with AutoDesk Recap, Civil 3D's Planning and Analysis workspace, ArcGIS or other software necessary to generate GIS linework as well as contours in AutoCAD from DEM's and/or LAS files.
  • Assist in the preparation of construction documents (drawings/plans, specifications, spreadsheets, exhibits, reports, diagrams, etc.) for inclusion and/or stand-alone sets for submission to local, state, and/or federal governmental review agencies.
  • Perform CAD drafting, using AutoCAD Civil 3D on a regular basis to transform conceptual designs into final drawings. A high level of proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D is required, to include the creation of surfaces, pipe networks, pressure networks, alignments, profiles, parcels, and complex corridor modeling. Must have experience utilizing Civil 3D to dynamically label all aspects of a site plan.
  • Work within a team of other professionals (landscape architects, geotechnical engineers, soil scientists, surveyors, etc.) to assist in the development of construction documents for various types of land development, including residential (single family, townhomes, multi-family, etc.), retail/commercial, industrial, and institutional uses.
  • Delineate drainage areas, determine time of concentration, and weighted C-values to calculate stormwater flowrates using the rational method and utilize that information to design stormsewer systems. A comprehensive knowledge of VDOT drainage structures and standards is required.
  • Determine the horizontal and vertical layouts for roadways and utilities associated with residential and commercial designs.
  • Prepare Erosion and Sediment Control plans meeting the requirements of the current Virginia Stormwater Management Handbook (VSMH) published by the Virginia DEQ as well as requirements from local jurisdictions.
  • Assist Project Engineers and Project Managers with Stormwater Management designs and be familiar with the VSMH.
  • Address site plan comments provided by local reviewing agencies, to include meeting with reviewers to fully understand the comments provided. Candidate must have enough experience to know when a comment provided by the reviewer could have significant impacts to the project, which can be relayed to the Project Manager.
  • Be responsible for job-specific quality control as defined in the KBJW resource documents and checklists.
  • Provide technical support to CAD Technicians and new engineering graduates who have limited drafting and site design experience.
  • Understand construction terminology and other concepts related to civil engineering, site design, landscape architecture, surveying, and construction practices.

Job Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED with drafting and designing experience considered
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License
  • 8+ years of experience with AutoCAD
  • 5+ years of experience with Civil 3D
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
  • Adobe Photoshop, Bluebeam, Acrobat, etc. experience a plus
  • Sketch-up, Revit, or Parametric Modeling software experience a plus
  • Experience with design software associated with pressure pipe systems, gravity sewer systems, and stormwater modeling
  • Ability to work with a minimal level of supervision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Great attitude and a desire to grow professionally

Physical Requirements:

  • May require the ability to sit for long periods of time, stand, walk, and manipulate (carry, lift, move) light to medium weights of 10-30 pounds.
  • Ability to walk construction job sites.
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate technical equipment, read technical information and to analyze complex data.
