General Summary: The Technical Writer is responsible for creating technical documentation from research and review of engineering, manufacturing, flight test, and supplier data. This includes but is not limited to airplane technical manuals, parts catalogs, and maintenance/flight procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities: Under guidance from the Technical Publications Supervisor, leads day to day operation of the Technical Publications department. Coordinates assigned work with internal and external assets to meet publication date requirements. Develops and authors procedures for Technical Publications in a structured authoring tool such as FrameMaker, Cortona3D Rapid Authoring, Arbortext and similar programs. Researches and verifies technical information to ensure it meets interdepartmental reliability and maintainability evaluations. Writes maintenance/flight procedures by processing source documents, notes, and vendor information within a Product Lifecycle Management system. Provides peer reviews and works with a team of technical writers with various backgrounds. Interviews production assemblers, engineers, subject matter experts and outside vendor personnel to gain insight into writing the procedure. Attends change control board, document approval, and information gathering meetings as a representative of the Technical Publications department. Other duties as assigned.

Education, Work Experience, Certification and/or Licensure: Bachelors’ degree in English or other directly related field and a minimum of four years of technical writing experience is required. Six years of aviation technical writing experience accepted in leu of bachelor’s degree. Hands on aviation maintenance experience and/or pilots license highly preferred. Previous experience authoring documentation in structured Adobe FrameMaker, RapidAuthor, Arbortext or similar authoring tools (i.e. - SGML, XML, ATA task numbering, typically DTDs/schema, elements and attributes).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of technical publications regulatory requirements and industry writing specifications (i.e. - ATA and S1000D) Proficiency in MS Office products. Ability to make sound writing decisions with little input from supervisors. Ability work independently and within a team environment. Ability to communicate effectively throughout all levels within an organization. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

Physical Requirements: Incumbents may be routinely exposed to equipment operational noise heat-cold-dust, and/or aircraft equipment, parts, or fuel odors. Incumbents may be required to stand, sit, squat, walk, bend, climb ladders, move, reach, or stretch for prolonged time periods with no restrictions, as required by job duties. Work in a safe and professional manner while adhering to all regulatory requirements (FAA, OSHA, DOT, EPA, State, and Federal regulations, etc.). Read, hear, speak, and see with no restrictions, as required by job duties. Comprehend and adhere to management directions and/or safety instructions with no restrictions. Effectively communicate in Business English language. Pull, push, carry, lift, or move items up to 10 lbs. throughout the work shift without assistance, as required by job duties.
