We are seeking an innovative network engineer to help us develop communications systems used to deliver key communications and teaming capabilities to our nation's decision makers. You will become part of a dynamic team comprised of seasoned engineers and skilled analysts, collaborating to design and deploy new real-time conferencing and collaboration technologies across the government and Department of Defense to have meaningful impact. As a Unified Communications Engineer, you will...
- Design and implement conferencing and collaboration solutions using existing commercial and standards-based technologies to connect decision makers.
- Continue to grow your knowledge and stay up-to-date on emerging technologies and propose innovative approaches to address unique sponsor challenges.
- Interact with technical specialists in other fields as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Provide mentorship to support early career staff growth and development.
- Detail work in technical reports and memoranda and present outcomes to sponsors and the technical community.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Have a Bachelor’s degree in information science and technology, computer science, computer engineering or another related technical field.
- Have at least ten years of relevant experience in developing and deploying Unified Communications solutions.
- Have demonstrated skill in designing, deploying, and configuring session border controllers, as well as managing voice and video gateways, with a demonstrated proficiency in the integration and peering of IP and TDM-based systems.
- Are familiar with industry standards like Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP).
- Have demonstrated competence in network design, considering cybersecurity measures, and possessing a strong foundation in communication systems protocols throughout the network stack.
- Have strong interpersonal skills including the ability to document design decisions in written formats and present to both expert and non-expert audiences.
Are able to obtain an Interim Top Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a TS/SCI level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...
- Have a Master's degree (or higher) in information science and technology, computer science, computer engineering or another related technical field.
- Have at least fifteen years of experience in developing and deploying Unified Communications solutions.
- Have vendor or industry certifications in the operation and management of varied vendor communications technologies.
- Are experienced in the architecture, design, and implementation of unified communications and online collaboration technologies for commercial and/or government applications.
- Have proficiency in the performance of media codecs, video and teleconferencing technologies, as well as conference management and collaboration software.
- Have proficiency in the development of system/system-of-system architectures, protocol and algorithm development, rapid prototyping and system integration.
- Have recent knowledge of DoD and/or intelligence community, sponsors, and programs.
- Hold an active TS/SCI clearance or an active Top Secret security clearance with a SSBI and have recently been adjudicated for SCI access.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

$90,000 Annually
Maximum Rate
$220,000 Annually
