BERKELEY ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE, INC. DISTRIBUTION DESIGNER Will consider a Distribution Designer Apprentice, Distribution Designer I or Distribution Designer II or equivalent OBJECTIVES To become proficient in all aspects of distribution design and develop as a leader at the Cooperative; to provide guidance and leadership to the Distribution Designer B and Distribution Design Apprentice personnel as needed. To perform all distribution design work and associated duties, accurately and efficiently, in accordance with the requirements of the Rural Utilities Service (RUS), the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), local ordinances, environmental regulations, and sound engineering practices so that the system safely meets the needs of the Cooperative's existing and future consumers. To acquire right-of-way easements for the Cooperative's lines and services, at the time of design whenever possible, by communicating and negotiating with Cooperative members, developers and others; to coordinate closely with the Cooperative's ROW Agent and Joint Use Coordinator as needed. To maintain a schedule of the projects assigned to him/her and to take ownership of those projects throughout their life-cycle from initial contact, to design, to easement acquisition, to release for construction, to inventory to help ensure accurate and timely completion of projects. POSITION SPECIFICATIONS EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent is required. The following industry training is required; Surveying, AutoCad, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Distribution Line Design, Overhead Structure Design, Joint Use Staking, Unique Structures, Basic Electric Distribution System, Metering for Staking Personnel, National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), Easement Acquisition, Obtaining Permits, Line Inspection, Underground Line Design and Subdivision Layout, Construction Contracts, Sizing Transformers and Conductors and Basic Sectionalizing and Line Equipment. Related experience at the Cooperative, another electric utility and/or an engineering consulting firm may be considered in lieu of education and/or training requirements. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of four (4) years as an Apprentice (or equivalent experience) and Distribution Designer B or Service Planner B with this Cooperative, or an equivalent position with another electric utility or consultant, is required. Will require two (2) years in this position to acquire further skills and training to become proficient. JOB KNOWLEDGE : Must be knowledgeable with uniform system of accounts, RUS specifications, NESC, OSHA, local and state codes. Must have an effective working knowledge of Cooperative system and service area. Must have knowledge of various types of electrical distribution equipment and their application. Must have thorough knowledge of Cooperative policies, procedures, rates and Service Rules and Regulations. ABILITIES & SKILLS: Must have ability to tactfully handle stressful or pressure contacts with members, developers and engineers. Must have both mathematical and electrical problem solving abilities. Must have ability to interpret civil, architectural and environmental drawings in order to identify potential conflicts. Must be able to use computers for correspondence and to efficiently operate the Cooperative's automated distribution design, lighting design, GPS, Autocad and mapping software. Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver's license. Must have the ability to use a transit, level, range finder and GPS instruments. WORKING CONDITIONS : Must be able to perform frequent physical activity including walking, stooping, bending, lifting up to 30 lbs., occasional lifting in excess of 30 lbs., climbing, kneeling, reaching, crawling, pushing and working in awkward positions and enclosed spaces. Must be physically able to work with a bush ax and chain saw. Primarily outside in various weather conditions including areas with rough terrain. Regular hours with some overtime required, some travel outside of system area may be necessary. Subject to irregular hours in adverse weather conditions during emergencies.
