THE TEAM

This position is dedicated to SPE’s digital magazine and publication websites. The Magazine group is an essential part of the larger Communications Group which focuses on one of SPE’s key missions to collect, disseminate, and exchange technical knowledge related to the oil and gas exploration and production and energy industry through magazines, technical journals, conference proceedings, and maintaining a multi-society online library of technical literature for the oil and gas and energy industry.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As a Technology Editor, you will play a critical role in contributing to the content of our flagship publication, the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT), now celebrating more than 75 years! You will focus on articles related to petroleum engineering technology and best practices. While this role is ideal for candidates with a foundational knowledge of the upstream oil and gas industry, your keen interest in technological advancements, with a willingness to learn and grow will be a greater contributing factor to your success in this role. In this junior role you will receive guidance and training from senior staff to develop your skills in communicating technical information clearly and effectively.

THE IMPACT YOU WILL MAKE IN THIS ROLE

  • Write articles for online publications as assigned, primarily the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT)
  • Contribute in-depth, long-form articles for JPT’s monthly editions and weekly short-form articles to drive website traffic to timely and relevant industry insights
  • Stay informed about the latest developments, trends, and best practices in petroleum engineering technology by actively participating in SPE conferences and events
  • Create content through interviews with subject-matter experts and thorough research including technical papers, reports, case studies, and participation in industry conferences
  • Work closely and collaborate with editorial team
  • Adhere to project schedules and deadlines.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERTISE

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English or a related field
  • 1-2 years of experience of interviewing, reporting, editing, and writing - preferably newspaper, magazine, or oil and gas websites
  • Enjoy adapting complex technical subjects into simpler layperson’s terms
  • Ability to work effectively with publications staff, SPE members, and industry subject matter experts
  • Eagerness to learn and stay up to date with industry trends and technical developments, open to mentorship from senior staff
  • Proficient with content management systems (CMS) and other digital publishing tools preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills


ADDITIONAL ATTRIBUTES FOR SUCCESS IN THIS ROLE

  • Prior experience working for a print or online magazine and/or newspaper is preferred
  • Working within a technology-driven industry is preferred; a good understanding of the Energy sector, particularly oil and gas, is a bonus!
  • Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision
  • Ability to attend events/meetings as needed including some evening events (mostly local to Houston)
  • Willingness to work overtime, as required
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%, mostly local to the Houston area
  • Experience in a global or multi-cultural organization, with an understanding of cultural differences in communication style (preferred)
