Description

Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to promote literacy and use of the library resources with families, children and teens. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
  • Participates in collection development and maintenance of assigned areas including selecting and de-selecting materials and resources.
  • Instructs patrons in the use of the library's print, audio-visual, online resources, and technologies; prepares bibliographies, create and maintains user guides, and creates displays that promote library resources and events.
  • Provides library tours to community groups, as well as individuals, and instructs patrons in the use of the library, the online library catalog, inter-library loans (ILL) and computers to access needed information, resources, and materials.
  • Works the circulation desk on assigned schedule; supervises pages while on duty, assigns computers for patrons, checks books in and out, monitors the behavior of patrons and collects fines.
  • Collaborates with community groups to promote literacy and other programs.
  • Promotes library reference and adult, kid, and teen programs through, but not limited to, public outreach, such as informational fairs, community events, and preparing in-house publicity materials, contributes to press releases and monthly newsletters.
  • Maintains and updates social media platforms.
  • Creates and maintains displays.
  • Maintains specialized knowledge of print and online resources to answer complex inquiries in assigned areas.
  • Maintains records and prepares monthly statistical reports on activities of assigned areas; assists with budget preparation by providing supporting statistical information for specialized areas.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Master's degree in library science or library and information science (MLIS)
  • Over two years and up to and including four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Supplemental Information

All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment.
