Position Summary: The Special Services and Spaces Librarian reports directly to the Public Services Coordinator and provides direct customer service at each of the public service desks in the branch. Additionally, this position works to ensure that our high standards of customer service are upheld for patrons utilizing our meeting spaces or non-traditional services.
Hours are varied, nights and weekends required and out of library hours. Schedule is subject to testing needs and passport service hours.
Responsibilities:
- Serve the public in a friendly, professional manner. Will be cross trained at all library service points to ensure complete comprehension of general library tasks.
- Serve as the primary contact for booking library meeting spaces.
- Exercises good judgment and communications skills in interpreting and explaining policy when approving or declining requests.
- Coordinate and/or manage the set-up/tear-down of various meeting rooms to meet the needs of patrons. Work with maintenance staff on regular cleaning of spaces to ensure a welcoming and pleasant environment.
- Make recommendations on new services, policy and procedure, equipment, furniture, and more to ensure that the library spaces meet the needs and expectations of the public.
- Oversee operation of the Pearson Vue and GED testing center. This would include working directly with patrons as a proctor, working with newly trained proctors, communicating relevant information to all staff, and working with supervisors and schedulers to set hours of operation and ensure adequate staffing.
- Act as Site Manager of the branch's Passport Acceptance Facility. This would include working directly with patrons as an acceptance agent, working with newly trained agents, and working with supervisors and schedulers to set hours of operation and ensure staffing coverage.
- Ensure both the testing center proctors, passport acceptance agents, and the sites themselves are following State Department or Pearson Vue regulations.
- Liaison with IT department staff on managing technical infrastructure updates and equipment maintenance for all library spaces.
- Liaison with Public Relations on promotion and marketing of special services and meeting spaces.
- Participate in branch management team meetings and serve on committees systemwide.
- May serve as a notary public.
- Serve as Manager on Duty or Staff in Charge of the branch in the absence of supervisory staff.
- Enforce Code of Conduct and other policies/procedures proactively and impartially.
- Input and retrieve computer data and statistics. Submit a report on monthly operations.
- Assist with opening and/or closing duties: assist in maintaining the orderly appearance of the library.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Master of Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited university
- Prior experience with test proctoring and/or passport services a plus.
- Experience with LibCal and other Springshare products desired.
- Experience working in an urban environment desired.
- Must have a sense of humor and an empathetic nature.
- Ability to work both independently and with limited supervision as well as part of a team.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Must be flexible, welcoming to innovation, and readily adaptable to change.
- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively deal with the public and coworkers in a positive, professional manner.
- Ability to think and act strategically; ability to solve problems creatively.
- Moderate physical demands including the ability to bend, kneel, reach to retrieve library materials and carry items weighing up to 50lbs, and can push book trucks or bins weighing 100lbs.
