Position Summary:
Momentum is seeking a passionate and skilled Music Director to execute the artistic vision of our performances, manage music needs, and ensure high-quality programming. The Music Director will collaborate closely with the Artistic Director and Show Producer to deliver impactful musical experiences for our audiences and
performers. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment and
possesses expertise in music direction, arranging, and accompaniment.

possesses expertise in music direction, arranging, and accompaniment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Show Music Direction:
- Collaborate with the Artistic Director and Show Producer to plan musical elements for Momentum's two main shows:
- Spring show: A week-long event at a professional theater featuring nearly a thousand children.
- Summer show: A performance for around 50 advanced dancers on an outdoor stage.
- Direct and perform with a band of professionals, contracting 6-7 musicians for each performance.
- Write band arrangements and prepare MP3s for choreographers and dancers for rehearsals.
- Coordinate with production staff on technical decisions and create click tracks if needed to align live music with pre-recorded elements.
- Collaborate with the Artistic Director and Show Producer to plan musical elements for Momentum's two main shows:
- Accompanist Supervision:
- Work with the Director of Operations to recruit, train, and coordinate hiring of piano accompanists.
- Conduct biannual observations and annual evaluations for accompanists, and determine pay raises in consultation with the Executive Director and Artistic Director.
- Schedule accompanists in coordination with the Programs Manager and Artistic Director, and review timecards biweekly.
- Supervise the Music Associate, a part-time salaried pianist, in artistic and administrative tasks.
- Acquire or create sheet music and lead sheets for accompanists with the help of theMusic Associate.
- Accompanying:
- Play for classes across all Momentum programs (Year-Long, Residency, Early Learners, and Advanced Teams).
- Advanced Teams:
- Accompany Monday evening rehearsals for Advanced Teams (Team XO) Nov-May, and occasional weeknight rehearsals for community events.
- Select, edit, and create recordings and sheet music as needed for events.
- Administrative Duties:
- Manage Momentum’s audio gear distribution with the Music Associate.
- Work with the Leadership team on financial planning and budgeting for music-related expenses.
- Representative Duties:
- Explore and implement new partnerships, both nationally and internationally.
- Serve as a spokesperson for Momentum at community events and NDI affiliate opportunities.
Qualifications:
- Required Skills:
- Proficiency with music notation software (Finale, Sibelius, or equivalent).
- Experience with digital audio workstations (Logic Pro, Pro Tools, GarageBand, or equivalent).
- Ability to set up and operate a basic mixer through a PA system.
- Highly Preferred Experience:
- Experience playing for musicals or theatrical productions.
- Skills in transcribing, arranging, and composing for ensembles, including rhythm sections.
- Experience working with click tracks and accompanying dance classes.
- Bonus Experience:
- Video editing.
- Skills in hand and foot percussion.
