ABOUT NEW CITY KIDS
New City Kids is a high energy, creative ministry for and with youth in Jersey City and Paterson, NJ and Grand Rapids and Detroit, MI. We are unique in trusting teens with leadership. It is a joyful place filled with laughter and hard work, and has an excellent staff of dedicated adults who love children. We employ local high school students as interns to lead an excellent and unique music- focused after school center and summer camp for children ages 6-13, which provides a platform for a whole host of development opportunities for children. As kids and teens engage New City Kids, we come alongside them and invite them to know the power of the gospel and to become disciples of Jesus Christ.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Music Coordinator will lead the implementation to the Music School embedded in the New City Kids After School Center and provide musical training and support for all teens serving as music teachers. The Music Coordinator will also work to create and develop the musical components of regular center programming, worship team, and major events/fundraisers and will support and provide mentoring and coaching to members of the teen staff and worship team.

SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide Music Leadership - Be the gatekeeper of all music programming quality for New City Kids. Cast the vision of the music school to adult staff, teen staff and children. Enhance all components of the New City Kids After School Center and Teen Life Internship through excellent musical programming.
  • Goal Achievement - Own and report on program goals. Lead music staff and resources to effectively meet program goals.
  • Master Teach - Work with a specific instrument class(es) to meet its goals. Coordinate curriculum to train teens on their instrument during weekly music lessons. Teach in class of either drums or keyboard once a week. Monitor student learning
  • Worship Team - Support teen worship team to meet musical needs of the After School Center and to prepare for external events including church visits and community engagement opportunities.
  • Coordinate Music for Site Performances - Work with music and center staff to prepare for and execute semesterly performances. Coordinate music class performances and provide musical leadership to teen teachers in order to showcase the musical talents and excellence of students.
  • Support overall Programs Musical Needs - Select and prepare kids and teens to be involved during programming including weekly Worship Time. Create opportunities for children to practice outside the classroom.
  • Equipment Care - Keep updated inventory on all instruments and musical equipment on site. Model instrument care for other staff. Communicate issues as they arise (purchasing new instruments, repairing broken parts) to the After School Center Director. Oversee daily instrument setup and breakdown.
  • Program Excellence - Ensure excellence of teen and music programming. Continually assess programming and spearhead team efforts to drive effectiveness in serving high school age interns.
  • Additional Program Support - Support recruitment, retention, and reporting efforts of the Teen Life Internship and After School programs including daily After School Center activities, evening teen programming and mentoring teen staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • A commitment and ability to communicate the goals and mission of New City Kids, including strong and active Christian faith and alignment with our Statement of Faith and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Policy
  • Confidence - Confidently leads and communicates well in a dynamic environment, making decisions in the midst of chaos
  • Dedication - Flexible, willing to complete tasks that fall outside ones job description; Has high-initiative and a high level of ownership
  • Proficient Musician - Expert in one or two of the following instruments: bass, drums, keys, vocals. Multi-musicians preferred.
  • Teaching and classroom management experience - A natural teacher; able to distill complex learning tasks into age-appropriate steps. Has taught in a classroom setting and guided classes to accomplish learning goals over time.
  • Relational and emotional maturity self-aware, teachable, sensitive to cross-cultural issues, and able to maturely deal with youth from broken contexts. Enjoys listening and spending time with teens, able to gain the trust of teens, and is a professional and mature role model for teens.
  • Affinity for gospel and/or pop - Enjoys playing, teaching contemporary / traditional gospel music; pop music a plus.
  • Affinity for children and teens enjoys being with kids aged 6-18 and can communicate at an age-appropriate level.
  • Bachelors degree in music is preferred, but not required
  • Written and spoken Spanish fluency strongly preferred

Physical Requirements:
  • Constantly moves about the center during programming hours
  • Help with set up and break down of instruments and equipment, able to lift and carry 50 pounds
